Daniel Constantine "Dan" Marino (nicknamed "Dan The Man") (* 15. September 1961 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played from 1983 to 1999 for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL). Marino held much of the NFL's top passing records at the end of his career , but never won a Super Bowl . In 2005 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Career

Marino played college football at the University of Pittsburgh from 1979 to 1982 and led the Pittsburgh Panthers to a triumph over the Georgia Bulldogs in the 1981 Sugar Bowl . In his last season, however, contrary to expectations, he could neither win the Heisman Trophy nor the national championship. His team lost the Cotton Bowl to Southern Methodist University (SMU). Because of his poor performance in his senior year of college and knee problems, Marino fell far behind in the 1983 NFL Draft and was selected only as the penultimate first-round player by the Miami Dolphins . He then played for the Dolphins for 17 years, most of them under Head Coach Don Shula .

NFL

In the 1984 season he led the Dolphins to Super Bowl XIX , which they lost 38:16 to the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback Joe Montana . In addition, Miami reached the division titles of the AFC East under his leadership in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1992 and 1994. With Marino as quarterback, the Dolphins were a reliable candidate for the play-offs , which they except for the years 1986-1989 always achieved. They also reached the AFC Championship Game three times , which they could only win in 1984, but lost in 1985 and 1992. Marino won the Dolphins' first away play-off game in over 20 years in his final 1999 season against the Seattle Seahawks . Despite all his successes, he was never able to receive the Vince Lombardi Trophy for victory in the Super Bowl because his team was never good enough in all positions. Either not a good running game or not a strong defense .

During his NFL career, Marino was one of the top quarterbacks. He was known for his ability to throw the ball very soon after the snap and very quickly. However, he wasn't a good runner. At the time of his retirement, he had the most comebacks (36) in the last quarter of the game in NFL history, ahead of John Elway (35). His best year was 1984, when he threw passes for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns . He led the Dolphins for the second time in three years in the Super Bowl, but lost it.

He long held the career records for yards thrown (61,361) and complete passes (4,967) and various other pass records. On September 30, 2007 he lost the records for touchdown passes (420) and pass attempts (8,358) and on December 16, 2007 in addition, the record for most yards thrown to Brett Favre . His record for most yards thrown in a season (5,084), which he had held since 1984, was lost to Drew Brees on December 26, 2011 . He received the title The NFL's Most Prolific Passer (about: most productive passport thrower in the NFL ). During his career, Marino was elected to the Pro Bowl nine times .

Dan Marino is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the 1980s National Football League All-Decade Team . In 1984 he received the Bert Bell Award and in 1994 the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award , and in 1998 the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award . In addition, the Dolphins erected a statue in front of the Hard Rock Stadium in his honor in 2000 .

After his professional time

In 1994 he starred in the American comedy Ace Ventura - A Beastly Detective . There he and his team, the Miami Dolphins, reached the Super Bowl, but lost, and boasts of his AFC championship ring.

In 2000, Marino had a cameo appearance in the film Little Nicky - Satan junior from Adam Sandler to win, in which he would sell his soul to the devil once the Super Bowl. He also made a brief appearance during a test drive in Bad Boys II in 2003 . Here, too, he played himself.

In early 2004, Marino returned briefly to the Dolphins as Senior Vice President of Football Operations , but resigned from the specially created post for family reasons just three weeks later.

Marino lives in Florida with his wife Claire and six children (two of whom are adopted) . During the football season he works as a presenter for CBS and HBO on their football programs.
