Michael Craig Nelms (* 8. April 1955 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is a former American American football - and Canadian football poker players. Among other things, he played as a punt returner in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins .

Player career

Mike Nelms studied at Sam Houston State University before moving to Baylor University . Nelms played in 1975 and 1976 as a defensive back football for the local football team, the Baylor Bears . In both academic years he was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements. In 1977 he was selected by the Buffalo Bills of the NFL in the seventh round of the 177th spot drafted . Since the head coach of the Bills Jim Ringo was not satisfied with the performance of Nelms, he was fired before the start of the season. He then moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats , which he left in the 1977 CFL season and joined the Ottawa Rough Riders . After the 1979 CFL season, Mike Nelms moved to the Washington Redskins in the NFL. The Redskins mainly used him in the special teams as a punt and kick-off returner.

In 1981 Joe Gibbs took over the coaching position with the Redskins. He managed to form a top team from the Redskins. Nelms was able to move into the playoffs with his team after the regular season in 1982 , where they faced the Dallas Cowboys supervised by Tom Landry in the NFC Championship Game . Michael Nelms was named a CFL All-Star in 1979. He played three times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best NFL players of the season. Nelms was voted All-Pro three times . The Washington Redskins named him their list of the team's 70 best players of all time. Nelms is a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team .
