Mike Haynes was born in Texas, but grew up in Los Angeles , where he also attended high school . As a track and field athlete and football player, he was recognized by his school for his athletic achievements and was voted Athlete of the Year in the last school year.

Player career

College career

Mike Haynes studied at Arizona State University from 1972 to 1975 . In college he played football as he did in high school, but continued to work as an athlete. In the long jump he won the conference championship . For the football team, he ran on defense as a cornerback, but also played in the special teams of the college team . In 1972, 1973 and 1975 he won the league championship with his team and moved into the Fiesta Bowl . All three games were won by his team. In 1972, his team remained undefeated and was therefore voted the nation's second best college team. Haynes was elected three times in the league selection, 1972 and 1975 each was elected to the All-American . During his studies in Arizona , he was able to intercept 17 passes of the opposing quarterback .

Professional career

Haynes was drafted fifth in the first round by the New England Patriots in 1976 . Even in his rookie game year , Haynes was used as a starter in defense . He got eight interceptions this season with which he was able to achieve a space gain of 90 yards . Although the Patriots could move into the play-offs in 1976, 1978 and 1982 , they did not win a title. Haynes was dissatisfied with his contract several times during his season at Foxborough . To force a contract improvement, he did not appear in the first three games of the season in 1980. In 1983 he even sat out for eleven games and managed to get the Patriots to hand him over to the Raiders during the season. The move to the Raiders trained by Tom Flores turned out to be a stroke of luck for Haynes in his first year in California . The Raiders moved into the NFC Championship Game and were able to defeat the Seattle Seahawks with 30:14. The victory meant for the Raiders the entry into the Super Bowl , where they met the Washington Redskins . The Redskins supervised by Joe Gibbs had no chance in Super Bowl XVIII and had to admit defeat 38: 9. Haynes was able to intercept a pass from Joe Theismann , the quarterback of the Redskins, in the game and thus contribute significantly to the victory of his team. The following year the Raiders were able to qualify for play-offs again, but were eliminated early. The highlight for Haynes that season was a game against the Miami Dolphins on December 4th. Already at the beginning of the game he was able to intercept a pass from Dan Marino and carry the ball over a distance of 97 yards into the end zone of the Dolphins. In the course of the game Haynes intercepted a second pass from Marino and this time was able to achieve a space gain of 54 yards. The space gained is still a club record today. After 177 games in the NFL, Mike Haynes ended his career after the 1989 season.
