Del Mar is a coastal city in San Diego County in the US state of California . It is located on the Pacific between Los Angeles and San Diego, west of Interstate 5 . 1882 founded Theodore Loop, a former railway employee, and his wife Ella a tent city on the beach and called that place Del Mar, according to a famous poem The fight on Paseo Del Mar . In 1910 the Stratford Inn Hotel was built and it quickly became a magnet for Hollywood stars. In 1959 Del Mar became independent from San Diego. The city has 4,161 inhabitants (status: 2010 census) on an area of 4.6 km². Del Mar is known for its racecourse and beaches.
Del Mar owned a legendary skate park that closed in the mid-1980s for lack of revenue. Many skaters, such as Tony Hawk , began their careers there.
Del Mar hosts the San Diego County Fair every summer , one of the county's largest folk festivals, which attracts over a million visitors annually.
