Salzwedel Castle

The castle Salzwedel is the ruin of a lowland castle in the castle garden on the northern edge of the old town of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel in the Altmark Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The castle was probably built in the 9th century to protect a trade route between Magdeburg and the saltworks town of Lüneburg at a crossing of the Jeetze ( ford ). The castle was first mentioned in 1112 as "Saltwidele" during the siege by Emperor Heinrich V. In 1134 the castle came into Ascanic possession with Albrecht the Bear . Until the beginning of the 13th century, the bailiffs of Salzwedel sat as agents of the margraves at the castle. The round keep , which is still visible today, was built around the end of the 12th century . The three-story residential building of the castle, which was demolished in 1899, was built in 1746, but according to Danneil it is said to have contained older buildings.

Hall of Honor

The originally ring-shaped castle complex with a total diameter of about 220 meters was again protected within the city by moats and walls.

Today remains of the defensive wall , the moat and the St. Anne's Chapel as well as the 24 meter high round donjon with a high entrance 12 meters high and a 3.60 meter thick wall at the foot of the tower are still preserved. The tower used to have a pointed roof.

In 1923 a hall of honor was built on the site to commemorate those who fell in the First World War.
