Tony Hawk
Anthony Frank "Tony" Hawk (born May 12, 1968 in Carlsbad , California ), nickname Birdman , is an American professional skateboarder . He is considered a pioneer of the modern vert style and has won eleven world championship titles. With his skateboard brand Birdhouse , the extreme sports event Boom Boom HuckJam , a video game series and the Tony Hawks Foundation , he has contributed significantly to the spread of the sport. In 1999 he was the first skater to turn a two-and-a-half-fold turn, the 900 ° , in a halfpipe, which aroused great media interest.
Life
Tony Hawk had mental health problems in his childhood. A psychologist at his school found that Hawk was an under-challenged boy with a very high potential for aggression . Because of this, his father gave him his first skateboard. In 1982, only just 14 years old, Hawk started as a professional on the Powell & Peralta team, the Bones Brigade . At the age of 16, he was considered the world's best skater. At 17 he bought his first house, and two years later a property in Fallbrook . His winning streak began in the mid-1980s. Hawk has been world champion eleven times in a row. During this time he won 73 of 103 competitions (19 times he came second) and invented over 85 new skateboard tricks such as the Stalefish , the Airwalk , the Madonna , the Gymnast Plant , the Hurricane or the 900 ° . The "900 °" is known as the most difficult trick in the world. On March 30, 2012, 12-year-old Tom Schaar surpassed the “900 °” in turns for the first time by landing a “1080 °”, albeit with the help of a very high ramp that made a much longer flight time possible. Tony Hawk was one of the first skateboarders to be named after a shoe model.
In 1987 Hawk played a supporting role in the film Police Academy 4 - And Now It's Going Around (Original title: Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol ), in which he proves his skate skills among a group of skaters.
In the early 1990s, almost bankrupt, he founded his own company called Birdhouse for the sale of skateboards, skateboarding accessories and accessories. When he was able to draw attention to himself again at the first X-Games in 1995 , this new fame gave his company such a powerful boost that in 1998 it became one of the most successful skate companies. 1999 is commonly known as The Year of the 900 among skaters , and it will also be the last Tony Hawk actively competed in. This year he managed the "900", a turn of 900 °, in the halfpipe. Ever since he retired from the competitive business, Hawk has only skated for fun at shows or moderates skate events like the X-Games. On June 27, 2016, exactly 17 years after he first managed a 900, he repeated the trick at the age of 48 on an indoor ramp. According to his own statement, this was the last 900 of his career. For his 50th birthday, the video "50 tricks at Age 50" was released in which he repeated vert tricks that shaped his career.
Hawk is three times divorced. He has been married to Catherine Goodman since 2015. He has three sons and one daughter. His oldest son, Riley Hawk, is now also a professional skateboarder.
In February 2020 Hawk took part as Elephant in the third season of the US offshoot of The Masked Singer and reached the 15th of a total of 18 places.
