William Ray Guy (* 22. December 1949 in Swainsboro , Georgia ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the punters . He played 14 years for the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) and won three Super Bowls ( Super Bowl XI , XV and XVIII ) with them .

Born in Swainsboro, Ray Guy grew up in Thomson , Georgia, and attended high school there . In school he played football, baseball and basketball . With his football team, he won the Georgia State Championship twice. He was also successful as a basketball player and was elected to the state selection. He has received a total of 16 awards from his school for his athletic achievements.

Player career

college

Ray Guy studied at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1970 to 1972 . He played college football and baseball with the Golden Eagles . For the football team, he played as a defensive back , punter and kicker . In all three academic years he was elected to the league selection, in 1972 the election to All-American . In the same year he took part in various college selection games. Guy also attracted attention nationwide as a baseball player. The Cincinnati Reds , Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves had keen interest in signing Guy. This turned down all offers and preferred a career in football.

NFL

Guy was selected as the 23rd player in the first round by the Oakland Raiders in the 1973 NFL Draft . This makes Guy the only punter so far who was signed in the first round of the draft. Under their head coach John Madden, the Raiders were a top team in the NFL with players like Gene Upshaw , Willie Brown and Jim Otto . Under him he was able to win his first Super Bowl in 1976 . After a season with 13 wins in one defeat, the Raiders first won the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers , overseen by Chuck Noll , 24: 7. In Super Bowl XI , Guy's team had to play against the Minnesota Vikings , who were beaten 32:14. 1979 Tom Flores took over the trainer position with the Raiders. With him, Guy won the Super Bowl twice more. After a 33:27 win over the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship Game in 1980, the team from Oakland competed in Super Bowl XV against the Philadelphia Eagles , who had to leave the field with a 27:10 defeat.

In 1982 the Raiders moved to Los Angeles . The team remained a top team in the NFL. They won Super Bowl XVIII the following year . First, the San Diego Chargers had to admit defeat in the AFC Championship Game at 14:30, before the Washington Redskins of coach Joe Gibbs had no chance in their 9:38 defeat against the Raiders.

After the 1986 season, Ray Guy ended his career. He was the statistically best punter in the league in 1974, 1975 and 1977 with 42.2, 43.8 and 43.3 yards of average space gain. In 1992 he was a first-time candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame . Eleven more nominations for admission to the Hall of Fame followed by 2010 and it was not until the end of the 2013 season that he became the first punter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Honors

Ray Guy played in the Pro Bowl seven times and was voted All-Pro eight times . He is a member of the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team , NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame , College Football Hall of Fame , Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, National High School Sports Hall of Fame and the Southern Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. In 2014, Ray Guy was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the first punter .
