Johann Georg Brand

Johann Georg Brand (born April 4, 1645 in Eschwege , † October 31, 1703 in Marburg ) was a Protestant theologian and professor of mathematics and metaphysics at the University of Marburg .

The son of a councilor from Eschweg studied theology, philosophy and mathematics in Marburg, where he soon received academic degrees. As early as 1673 he received his doctorate as Doctor Theologiae (comparable to today's habilitation), in 1679 associate professor and in 1682 full professor of mathematics . In 1687 he took over the professorships for logic and metaphysics .

Brand has written numerous writings that are listed in Strieder, Hessische Schehrten- und Writersgeschichte. Among his colleagues in Marburg was u. a. Philipp Johann Tilemann (1640–1708).

His better-known students include Johann Christian Kirchmayer (1674–1743), who later became rector of Heidelberg and Marburg, and Johann Joachim Schröder (1680–1756), orientalist and church historian.
