James LeRoy Bakken , (* 2. November 1940 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is a former American Football player . He played as a punter and kicker in the National Football League (NFL).
career
Bakken first played at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was drawn in the 1962 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh round in 88th place. Bakken played for the Cardinals for 17 years. In 1967 he was able to shoot 7 field goals in one game , which was a league record in the NFL until 2007. In 1974 he moved into the play-offs with his team , where they lost to the Minnesota Vikings with 30:14 early on . Bakken scored two point after touchdowns . The following year, the Cardinals failed in the play-offs at the Los Angeles Rams with 35:23. Bakken converted a field goal and scored two extra points.
In total, he was able to achieve 282 field goals during his career. Occasionally Bakken was also used as a punter. After the 1978 season he ended his career and at that time had scored the third most points in the NFL. Currently (December 2019) he is 33rd in the NFL rankings for the most points scored in a professional career.
Honors
Jim Bakken played four times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He has been elected All-Pro five times and is a member of the WFCA Hall of Fame , the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team and the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , and the Athletic Hall of Fame of his college and the Madison Sports Hall of Fame.
