James Earl "Jimmy" Johnson (* 31 March 1938 in Dallas , Texas ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as cornerback for 16 years in the National Football League (NFL) with the San Francisco 49ers .

youth

Jimmy Johnson was born in Dallas, but his family moved to Kingsburg , California after he was born . He still has two brothers and two sisters. At Kingsburg High School , he was active as a football, basketball and baseball player. In all three sports he was the team captain of the school team. His brother Rafer Johnson was also a sports enthusiast, he was a successful athlete and won the silver medal in the decathlon at the 1956 Summer Olympics . Four years later he won the gold medal in the same discipline at the 1960 Summer Olympics .

Player career

College career

After a year of study at Santa Monica City College, Johnson studied from 1958 to 1960 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), for their football team, the UCLA Bruins, he played as wingback and defensive back . Like his brother Rafer, who had also studied in Los Angeles and attracted attention as a track and field athlete, Jimmy was also active as a long jumper and hurdler. For his athletic achievements, he has received a total of three awards from his college . In particular, Johnson's speed drew the attention of the NFL and American Football League (AFL) scouts .

Professional career

Jimmy Johnson was drafted 31st in the fourth round in 1961 by the San Diego Chargers , an AFL team . However, Johnson joined the San Francisco 49ers who picked him sixth in the NFL Draft in the first round. The 49ers initially only used him as a cornerback , in 1962 and 1963 he also received more time as a running back from Head Coach Red Hickey . The team from San Francisco reached the play-offs of the NFL neither under Hickey nor under his successor Jack Christiansen . In 1968 Dick Nolan took over the coaching office, he managed to form a top team out of the team. 1970 Johnson was able to move into the play-offs for the first time with his team, but where they failed in the NFC Championship Game at the Dallas Cowboys with 17:10. Against the same team, the 49ers failed in the NFC Championship Game the following year, this time 14: 3. 1972 succeeded Johnson for the last time to move into the play-offs. This time the team failed in the divisional play-off game against the Cowboys with 30:28. After 212 games for the 49ers, Johnson ended his professional career after the 1976 season.

Honors

Jimmy Johnson played five times in the Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro eight times . He is a member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame , the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, and The Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame and the 49ers Hall of Fame. The 49ers have blocked his shirt number.
