Pro Football Hall of Fame

Michael Anthony Muñoz (* 19 August 1958 in Ontario , California ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of offensive tackles . He played for the Cincinnati Bengals in the National Football League (NFL).

youth

Anthony Muñoz was raised by his single mother, Esther, along with his four siblings. His grandparents were from Chihuahua , Mexico . His mother worked as a packer on a chicken farm. At the weekend he and his brother had to help out on the farm. Anthony never really got to know his father; he only saw him twice in his life - at the ages of five and twelve.

Because of his height, he was not allowed to play football in a youth league as a child. He then turned to baseball and played as a pitcher in various youth teams. It wasn't until high school that he was given the opportunity to play football as well as baseball and basketball . In the football team of his high school he played both on the offensive line and on the defensive line and was also given time as a punter . As a football player, he became known to several college scouts and he was offered scholarships from numerous colleges after graduating from high school .

Player career

College career

Muñoz accepted the offer from the University of Southern California (USC). However, he was only ready to accept this after it was promised that he would not need to take part in spring training in order to play for the "USC Trojans" baseball team. Due to a knee injury, he was only used in his sophomore game year in the baseball team, but won the NCAA college championship with the team that year .

In the football team of the Trojans he played together with Brad Budde on the offensive line. In 1978 and 1979 Anthony Muñoz was voted All-American as a football player for his athletic achievements . However, knee injuries repeatedly gave him problems and he was unable to play many of his team's games. It was therefore questionable whether a professional team would take the risk of a commitment. In 1980, Muñoz played for the Trojans for the last time in the Rose Bowl . His team won the game against Ohio State University 17:16. One spectator of the game was the owner of the Cincinnati Bengals, Paul Brown . Brown was a former football coach and recognized the player's qualities.

Professional career

Anthony Muñoz was drafted third in the first round in 1980 by the Cincinnati Bengals . The coach of the Bengals, Forrest Gregg , already used him as a rookie as a starter on the position of tackle. In this position he had to ensure the protection of quarterback Ken Anderson . In 1981 the Bengals won twelve of 16 games in the regular season and were able to qualify for the play-offs . In the AFC Championship Game , the team met the San Diego Chargers and defeated them 27: 7. With the win, the team from Cincinnati qualified for Super Bowl XVI . Opponents in the game were the San Francisco 49ers , supervised by Bill Walsh . The 49ers quarterback Joe Montana scored two touchdowns in the first half of the game , Ray Wersching scored two field goals for his team. The Bengals could not make up for this 20-0 deficit and ultimately lost 26:21. In the following year the Bengals were able to qualify for the play-offs, but failed there prematurely at the New York Jets .

From 1984 Sam Wyche trained the Bengals. In the same year, the team signed Boomer Esiason , who took the position of starting quarterback from the following year . In the 1988 season, the Bengals were again able to make twelve of 16 games victorious and move into the play-offs again. In the AFC Championship Game , the team around Muñoz met the Buffalo Bills , which could be beaten with 21:10. In the subsequent Super Bowl XXIII , the 49ers were again the opponent. Until a few seconds before the end, the Bengals led the game 16:13. With a pass to John Taylor , Montana managed to put his team in the lead. The 49ers won the Super Bowl 20:16.

After the 1992 season, Muñoz ended his career with the Bengals and moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . For this team, however, he was no longer used.

Off the field

Muñoz starred in two Hollywood films during his career. In 1994 and 1995 he worked as a sports presenter for the Fox Broadcasting Company . Anthony Muñoz has been married since 1978. The couple have two children.

Anthony Muñoz played eleven times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was elected all-pro eleven times . He is a member of the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team , the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team , the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the California Sports Hall of Fame, and the University of Southern California Athletic Hall of Fame .
