Ozzie Newsome Jr. (* 11. March 1956 in Muscle Shoals , Alabama ) Nickname : The Wizard of Oz is a former American American football poker players. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cleveland Browns . Newsome was an official at the Baltimore Ravens from 1999 to 2019 , where he held the position of general manager . He was the first African American general manager in the NFL.

Ozzie Newsome visited Leighton the high school where he was a baseball - basketball and football player was active. He played in various positions on the football team. After school, he had to contribute to his family's livelihood and work in the surrounding cotton fields and help out in his father's restaurant, Fat's Cafe .

Player career

College career

Newsome studied from 1974 to 1977 at the University of Alabama and played the Alabama Crimson Tide as a wide receiver for their football team . Ozzie has received many awards for his athletic achievements. He was elected three times to the selection team of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and twice to the All-American . In 1977 he was voted Offensive Player of the Year by the SEC . Newsome and his team won the SEC championship three times. He successfully completed his horticultural studies and received several awards from his college for his athletic achievements.

Professional career

Ozzie Newsome was drafted 23rd in the first round by the Cleveland Browns in 1978 . For the Browns, he moved to the position of tight end and was already as a rookie for starters . In 1984 Marty Schottenheimer took over the position of head coach at the Browns, who succeeded in hiring quarterback Bernie Kosar in 1985 . In 1986 Newsome was to move into the AFC Championship Game for the first time with his team . Previously, the Browns had managed to beat the New York Jets by 23:20 in the divisional play-off game . Newsome was instrumental in the victory. With six passes from Kosar he managed to gain 114 yards . In the AFC Championship Game, the Newsome team lost to the Denver Broncos 23:20.

The Browns were also successful in the coming year. Newsome achieved four pass catches in the AFC divisional play-off game against the Indianapolis Colts to a space gain of 65 yards. After the 38:21 victory over the Colts, the Browns failed again in the AFC Championship Game against the Broncos. Newsome was unable to prevent his team's 38:33 defeat with three pass catches.

Also in the game round 1989, the team from Cleveland could not beat the Denver Broncos in the final. The Browns had previously been able to prevail in the AFC Divisional Play-Off Game with 34:30 against the Buffalo Bills , whereby Newsome could catch four passes again, but then had to admit defeat to the Broncos with 37:21 in the final . As a professional player, Newsome never won a title with his team. After the 1990 season, he ended his career.

Football official

Ozzie Newsome moved to the administration of the Browns after his playing career. He initially worked there as a scout before he was appointed head of the human resources department. The Browns temporarily stopped their gaming operations in 1995, their organization moved to Baltimore and henceforth called Baltimore Ravens . Newsome was initially Vice President of the Ravens and also had personnel responsibility. He managed to sign numerous well-known players, such as Ray Lewis , Rod Woodson , Shannon Sharpe and Trent Dilfer . Together with coach Brian Billick , he is considered the "architect" of the Baltimore Ravens, who were able to defeat the New York Giants 34: 7 in Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 . Newsome was the general manager of the Ravens until 2019 . He was the first black manager in the NFL. During his tenure, the Ravens were able to move into the play-offs ten times. Honors

Ozzie Newsome has played in the Pro Bowl three times , has been elected All-Pro seven times , and is a member of the 1980s NFL All-Decade Team , Pro Football Hall of Fame , College Football Hall of Fame, and Alabama Sports Hall of Fame . The Cleveland Browns honor him at Cleveland Browns Stadium on the Ring of Honor .
