Shannon Sharpe (* 26 June 1968 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American American football poker players. He played tight end with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Sharpe grew up in modest circumstances with his grandmother in Georgia together with his older brother Sterling Sharpe on a later wide receiver of the Green Bay Packers . He visited in Glennville the high school and played there as a wide receiver. In 1987 the outstanding athlete / triple jumper received a scholarship from Savannah State University in Savannah , Georgia, where he played basketball as well as football .

Professional time

In the 1990 NFL Draft , Sharpe was drawn by the Broncos in the seventh round in 192nd place. The late draft pick is normally an indication of a short professional career, but Sharpe should still prevail. After his first year as a professional, he was retrained to tight end by his coach Dan Reeves due to his athletic skills . His catching security, speed, his ability to block the way into the opposing end zone for his fellow attackers, made him one of the most successful tight ends in NFL history. Quarterback John Elway in particular , but also later Trent Dilfer , quarterback for the Ravens, benefited from his ability to catch even difficult passes. In the course of his career, Sharpe increased his statistical performance several times and scored a total of 62 touchdowns in 203 games during the regular season . With his 815 passports captured, he gained 10060 yards .

In 1998, meanwhile Mike Shanahan had taken over the position of head coach at the Broncos, Sharpe and his team could win the Super Bowl XXXII against the Green Bay Packers under coach Mike Holmgren with quarterback Brett Favre with 31:24. In 1999 he was again a member of the Broncos team, which was able to successfully defend its title in Super Bowl XXXIII with a 34:19 win over the Atlanta Falcons . In 2000 and 2001 Sharpe ran for the Ravens and was able to win another Super Bowl in 2001. Super Bowl XXXV went 34: 7 against the New York Giants to the team from Baltimore . In 2002 and 2003 he ran again for the Broncos and then ended his career.

Sharpe was not only famous for his athletic achievements. Again and again he drew attention to himself through insulting speeches to opponents or opposing teams and was therefore not respected by all NFL players, especially since he made such statements in front of television cameras.

Honors

Sharpe played eight times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He is a member of the National Football League's 1990s All-Decade Team . He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 after being nominated for it in 2009. In addition, Savannah State University no longer awards "its" No. 2.

After the career

Sharpe works on a talk show on Fox called Skip and Shannon. He lives in Los Angeles.
