Sterling Sharpe (* 6. April 1965 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American American Football- players on the position of wide receiver . He played for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Sharpe grew up with his grandmother in Georgia, along with his younger brother Shannon Sharpe , one of the best tight ends in NFL history. He attended high school there and played basketball as well as football and was a successful athlete . As a long jumper, he held the state record in Georgia in his age group. At Glennville High School , Sharpe was used as a quarterback , linebacker , kickoff returner, and running back . Sharpe, who was repeatedly plagued by injuries, regularly ignored them and played anyway.

In 1985 he received a scholarship from the University of South Carolina at Columbia and graduated in 1987 in interdisciplinary studies . During this time he played as a wide receiver for the South Carolina Gamecocks and improved the records of his college during his studies to 169 pass catches with a gain of 2,497 yards and 17 touchdowns .

Professional time

In the 1988 NFL Draft , Sharpe was selected sixth by the Packers in the first round. Already in his first year he received regular working time and was always played by quarterback Don Majkowski . The Packers under coach Lindy Infante were at that time a team from the lower half of the table. The team could not improve significantly in the next few years, although Sharpe quickly developed into one of the best wide receivers in the NFL due to his catch safety and his speed. In 1992 , Brett Favre was signed by the Atlanta Falcons , while Mike Holmgren replaced Infante as coach. The ingenious playmaker Favre managed to get Sharpe into the game again and again with his exact passports. In 1993 the team was able to move into the play-offs for the first time with Sharpe and Favre . The team was eliminated in the second game after a 27:17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys . In 1994 there was again the move into the play-offs and the repeated elimination against the Cowboys in the second round, this time after a 35: 9 defeat.

In the 1994 season Sharpe suffered a neck injury and had to end his career after only seven seasons. Sharpe's individual accomplishments have been paramount throughout his short career. He scored a total of 65 touchdowns , in 1992 and 1994 with 13 and 18 touchdowns, respectively, the season best of all pass recipients. In total, he was able to catch 595 passes for a space gain of 8,134 yards in his career in the regular season .

Honors

Sharpe played five times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame . His brother Shannon, who won the Super Bowl three times , presented him with his first championship ring in recognition. In 2014 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .

After the career

Sharpe works as a television presenter and football analyst.
