The 1994 NFL season was the 75th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 4, 1994 and ended on December 26, 1994. In Super Bowl XXIX , the San Francisco 49ers won against the San Diego Chargers . The season ended with the Pro Bowl on February 5, 1995 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu , Hawaii . On the occasion of the anniversary season, the National Football League 75th Anniversary All-Time Team , consisting of the best players from the past 75 seasons, was selected.
From this season the Phoenix Cardinals ran under the name Arizona Cardinals for the first time, with the aim of addressing more people .
The Seattle Seahawks played the first three games of the regular season at Husky Stadium because their actual home ground , the Kingdome on the roof, had to be repaired.
It was the last season in which Los Angeles was represented by the NFL, as the Rams then moved from LA to St. Louis and the Raiders went back to Oakland .
The salary cap , the upper limit for total player salaries, was introduced this season.
Rule changes
After the number of touchdowns fell by 22% between 1983 and 1993 and the number of field goals increased by 14%, some new rules were introduced with the aim of promoting the offensive, making it easier to gain points and making the kicking game less popular:
- Defenders may only "jam" receivers within the first five yards
- After a failed field goal attempt, the defending team takes the ball at kick height (not the line of scrimmage ) or at the 20-yard line, whichever is further from the goal line.
- Radio connections from the head coach to a player were allowed
- During field goal and extra point attempts, defending players may not defend below the waist.
- the two-point conversion was reintroduced
- The starting point for the kickoff will be moved from the 35 yard to the 30 yard line. This rule was valid up to and including the 2010 season .
- The neutral zone infraction penalty is introduced, whereby a play is immediately interrupted if a defensive player enters the neutral zone and thus provokes a reaction from an offensive player.
In addition, a salary cap of 34.6 million US dollars was introduced for the first time .
NFL draft
The 1994 NFL Draft took place April 24-25 at the Marriot Marquis in New York City . The draft ran over seven rounds in which 222 players were selected. Since the Cincinnati Bengals had the worst record in the past 1993 season , they had the right to select the first player in the draft. With the first-round pick they chose defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson from the Ohio State University .
