Whitmell Hill

Whitmell Hill (born February 12, 1743 in Bertie County , Province of North Carolina , † September 26, 1797 in Hamilton , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1778 and 1780 he was a delegate for North Carolina in the Continental Congress .

Career

Whitmell Hill attended public schools in his home country. He then studied at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia . Then he returned to North Carolina, where he built his Hill's Ferry plantation in what would become Martin County . In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. He became a member of several revolutionary committees in his home country and served as a lieutenant colonel and colonel in the American armed forces during the War of Independence . In 1776 he was a delegate to the North Carolina Constitutional Convention; in 1777 he became a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . He also sat in the State Senate between 1778 and 1780 and between 1784 and 1785 . From 1778 to 1778 he represented North Carolina in the Continental Congress. Whitmell Hill died on September 26, 1797 on his Martin County plantation.
