The 1949 NFL season was the 30th season of the National Football League (NFL). The Philadelphia Eagles emerged as the winner of this season . Special events

Before the start of the season, Alexis Thompson sold the Eagles to an investment group led by James P. Clark ; the Boston Yanks were relocated to New York City and became the New York Bulldogs . The league introduced the unlimited number of substitutions on a trial basis for one year. With Steve Van Buren of the Philadelphia Eagles and Tony Canadeo of the Green Bay Packers , two players were able to run for more than 1,000 yards for the first time in the same season . Wally Triplett of the Detroit Lions became the first black player to be selected in the NFL Draft and later to play in the NFL. Four quarterbacks were selected from the top ten players in the draft, an amount that was only achieved again in the 2018 NFL Draft .

NFL Championship Game

The 1949 NFL Championship Game took place on December 18, 1949 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles , California . The winners of the Eastern and Western divisions competed against each other. Defending champion Philadelphia won 14-0 against the Los Angeles Rams in front of 22,245 spectators. Pete Pihos caught the first touchdown of the game after a 15-yard pass from Tommy Thompson , and Leo Skladany scored the second after a blocked punt . 40,000 tickets were previously available for the game and up to 70,000 spectators were expected in good weather; However, continuous rain made many stay at home. Both teams found the weather so bad that they wanted to postpone the game until after Christmas, but Commissioner Bert Bell did not allow this. Ticket prices ranged from $ 3.60 to $ 5.
