The 1990 NFL season was the 71st season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 9, 1990 and ended on December 31, 1990.

For the first time a game-free week was introduced. This increased the number of game weeks to 17, the number of games remained at 16. For the play-offs, the number of teams was increased to 12. One wildcard team was added to each conference.

A 2-minute limit has been introduced with regard to the viewing of video recordings during referee decisions.

A total of 17,665,671 people watched the games in the stadiums. In the regular season that meant an average of 62,321 people per game.

The season ended with the Pro Bowl on February 3, 1991 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu , Hawaii .

The Super Bowl XXV was on 28 January 1991 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans instead. In the final, the Buffalo Bills met the New York Giants , the Giants won 20:19.
