The 1995 NFL season was the 76th season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 3, 1995 and ended on December 25, 1995. In Super Bowl XXX , the Dallas Cowboys won against the Pittsburgh Steelers , making them the first NFL team to win three championships in four seasons. The season ended with the Pro Bowl on February 4, 1996 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu , Hawaii .

This season, the number of NFL teams has increased to 30. New additions were the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars , which were integrated into the two remaining divisions, which previously only consisted of four teams (the others consisted of five teams each): the AFC Central (Jaguars) and the NFC West (Panthers) .

The two Los Angeles-based teams moved to other cities: the Rams to St. Louis and the Raiders back to Oakland . During the season, Art Modell , owner of the Cleveland Browns , announced on November 6, 1995 , the day after losing 10:37 to the Houston Oilers and recording a 4-5 record, that his team would be moving to Baltimore for the next season .

Rule changes

  • A pass recipient who has been removed from the field of play by a defending player may re-enter the field and is entitled to catch a pass during this turn.
  • Quarterbacks are now allowed to receive instructions from the coaching staff via a receiver in their helmet. This repealed the existing ban from 1956 .

NFL draft

The 1995 NFL Draft took place April 22-23 at Madison Square Garden in New York City . Since the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars were newly added to the league that year, they also had the right to select the first two players. After the Jaguars were allowed to choose first in the NFL Expansion Draft , which took place on February 15, 1995, the Panthers were able to choose the first player in the regular draft . However, they gave their rights to the Cincinnati Bengals , who selected running back Ki-Jana Carter , who had previously played for Penn State . The Bengals gave their pick in fifth place and their pick in the second round to the Panthers in the swap. The Bengals had the first pick in the draft for the second year in a row. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also managed to select two future Hall of Famers in one round with Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks . This was previously only achieved by the Chicago Bears in the 1965 draft and was repeated in the following draft by the Baltimore Ravens .
