NFL season
|
The 2020 NFL season will mark the 101st season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The season is expected to start on September 10, 2020 with the regular season and end on February 7, 2021 with the Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , Florida .
The Oakland Raiders moved to Paradise , Nevada , near Las Vegas before the season started and became the Las Vegas Raiders . This makes them the first NFL team based in the state of Nevada. In Las Vegas, the Raiders will play at Allegiant Stadium .
Before the start of the season, the Washington Redskins dropped their nickname Redskins . In the interim (planned for around the 2020/21 season) the name Washington Football Team will be used until a new name is found.
New Collective Bargaining Agreement
In March 2020, the league and the players' union agreed on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will apply until the 2030 season. This results in some changes to the league's game operations:
- The regular season will be expanded from 16 to 17 games per team (2021 at the earliest). This means that the preseason will be shortened to three games from the 2021 season.
- The play-offs will be increased from 12 to 14 teams from the 2020 season. In the future there will be a third wild card team per conference, which will compete against the second best division winner, for whom the game-free week will not be applicable in the future.
- The players should receive 48 percent of the league's total income from 2021, with the entry into force of a 17-game season this share should increase to 48.8%. So far, the proportion of players has been 47%.
- The regulations on testing for marijuana use have been relaxed. Instead of a four-month period, a reduced number of players will be tested in a two-week window. In addition, the permissible limit has been increased and the penalties are to be milder.
- The squad will be expanded from 53 to 55 players, and the practice squads will be enlarged.
Rule changes
At the owners' meeting at the end of May 2020, the following rule changes were decided:
- The automatic review after the two-minute warning or in overtime has been extended to include try attempts , regardless of whether they are successful. In addition, all scoring plays and turnovers that have been revoked due to a penalty can be checked.
- Kick or punt returners who catch the ball but do not have time to avoid or fend off contact with an opponent are considered "defenseless players", i.e. H. they must not be tackled .
- If the offense commits a "dead ball foul" in the fourth quarter or overtime, the game clock stops. This is to prevent a targeted game delay, as used in the previous season by the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans.
- The maximum number of players who can return to the active squad from the injured reserve list will be increased from two to three, but the players must be on this list for at least eight games.
