Gerald Keith McCoy Jr. (* 25. February 1988 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) is an American American football poker players on the position of the defensive tackles . McCoy plays for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Oklahoma , where he was voted All-American . In the 2010 NFL Draft , he was selected in the first round as the third player by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . He was elected four times to the Pro Bowl and three times to the All-Pro .

Early years

McCoy attended Southeast High School in Oklahoma City, where he played football for the Southeast Spartans and also practiced athletics . As a junior he got 83 tackles , including 23 tackles for a loss of space and 20 sacks, and he received several awards. As a senior he had 82 tackles, 20 sacks and nine conquered fumbles , for which he u. a. of USA Today was named 2005 "National Defensive Player of the Year." In athletics, he was one of Oklahoma's best shot putters with a personal best of 16.90 m .

Rivals.com rated McCoy a five-star talent and best defensive tackle in his class. Overall, he was ranked fourth on the list of top high school football players, which was the best defensive tackle placement since Haloti Ngata (No. 2 in 2002). McCoy received scholarship offers from virtually every university in the United States and ultimately decided to stay in his home state and attend the University of Oklahoma .

As a student at the University of Oklahoma, he played for the Oklahoma Sooners College Football from 2006 to 2009 . In 2007, he was named Defensive Freshman of the Year of the Big 12 Conference , having scored 19 tackles in 13 games, including 6.5 for loss of space, and two sacks. The next year he got 30 tackles and 6.5 sacks, for which he was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year . Although he was promised good chances for the 2009 NFL Draft , he returned to college for another year. This season he was voted All-American for the second year running and was one of four finalists for the Lombardi Awards 2009. McCoy had captained the Sooners for two years while starting all of his 40 games at college was.

NFL

McCoy was considered one of the top talent prior to the 2010 NFL Draft and was rated either as a 4-3 "Three-Technique" Defensive Tackle or 3-4 Defensive End . The Tampa Bay Buccaneers eventually selected him as the third player in the first round. He booked his first sack against the San Francisco 49ers on November 21, 2010. A week later, he got two sacks against Joe Flacco , quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens , but he injured himself in the further course of the game and had to end the season prematurely. He also struggled with injuries in the 2011 season and was only able to play eleven games. In 2012 , however, he took off when he was an important part of the Buccaneers' strong running defense and was nominated for the Pro Bowl for the first time . In 2013 he played at a consistently high level and posted 50 tackles, nine sacks, eight tackles for loss of space, four defended passes and one fumble. Pro Football Focus rated him the NFL's best defensive tackle, and he was re-elected to the Pro Bowl. After McCoy performed well in 2014 , the Buccaneers gave him a seven-year contract extension for $ 98 million. That made McCoy the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle at the time.

After nine seasons, the Buccaneers parted ways with McCoy despite the remaining three-year contract.

On June 4, 2019, the Carolina Panthers announced their signing. He signed a one-year contract for up to $ 10.25 million for the coming season, of which 8 million were guaranteed.

In March 2020 he moved to the Dallas Cowboys .
