Eric Steven Weddle (* 4. January 1985 in Fontana , California ) is a former American American football poker players in the National Football League (NFL). He played nine seasons as safety for the San Diego Chargers , three for the Baltimore Ravens and was most recently under contract for a year with the Los Angeles Rams .

college

Weddle, who also played basketball , baseball, and soccer in high school , attended the University of Utah and played college football with great success for their team, the Utes . He held various positions in the secondary , where he was able to set a total of 277 tackles , achieve 10 sacks and prevent 23 passes in 48 games . He also got 18 interceptions . In addition, he was occasionally used in the offense , where he scored 6 of his 9 touchdowns or as a holder and occasionally as a punter .

NFL

San Diego Chargers

Weddle was selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft as 37th by the San Diego Chargers . In his rookie season he was used in 15 games, and since his second season he has been permanently called up as Starting Strong Safety. In 2009 he was able to achieve his first touchdown in the game against the Miami Dolphins . In the 2011 season he got seven interceptions and led together with Charles Woodson and Kyle Arrington the relevant league statistics.

Although Weddle was the defining personality in the Chargers' defense for years, there were increasing disagreements in the 2015 season. For example, he was fined US $ 10,000 for staying on the sidelines during the break without permission to watch his daughter, who was a junior cheerleader on the halftime show, and thus stayed away from the tactical meeting. A little later he was placed on the Injured Reserve List against his will .

Baltimore Ravens

In March 2016, he signed a four-year $ 29 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens . After his first season in Baltimore, he was called to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time because of his good performance . He was released by the Ravens on March 5, 2019.

Los Angeles Rams

Just three days after being fired from the Ravens, it was revealed that Weddle had signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams . After the 2019 season, Weddle announced his retirement on February 6, 2020.
