Luke August Kuechly (born April 20, 1991 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is a retired American football player in the middle linebacker position . He played for the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL) from 2012 to 2019 . Kuechly was nominated seven times in a row for the Pro Bowl and is considered one of the best linebackers of his time. Luke Kuechly is of German-American descent.
Career
college
From 2009 Kuechly attended Boston College , where he played college football for the Eagles until 2011 . After breaking multiple records in his three college years (thanks largely to a stellar graduation season) and winning multiple awards (such as the Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy ), he went into the 2012 NFL Draft as one of the most promising talents .
NFL
Luke Kuechly was selected in the first round as the ninth player (and as the first linebacker) by the Carolina Panthers , for whom he played from the 2012 season. In his rookie season, Kuechly was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year . In his second season in 2013, he was named Defensive Player of the Year . Luke Kuechly signed a four-year contract for 12.58 million at the Panthers dollars . He reached Super Bowl 50 with the Carolina Panthers in 2016 , but lost to the Denver Broncos.
With constant performance at the highest level (in the 2018 season he scored the league- wide third most tackles for loss of space), he earned six Pro Bowl nominations in a row.
After the 2019 season , Kuechly announced that he would end his career.
