Tyrant Devine Mathieu (born May 13, 1992 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American football player. He plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL), where he holds the position of Strong Safety and is nicknamed "Honey Badger".

On 2. February 2020 he won with the Kansas City Chiefs the Super Bowl LIV in the 100th NFL season.

college

Mathieu attended Louisiana State University (LSU) and played college football with great success for their team, the Tigers . He was able to win numerous titles with his team and has received numerous awards. For example, he not only won the SEC championship with the Tigers , but was also voted MVP of the final. On August 10, 2012, he was kicked out of the team for violating the team's drug abuse rules. On October 25 of the same year, he was finally arrested for the illegal possession of marijuana, before deciding on November 29 to enroll in the NFL Draft.

Arizona Cardinals

In the 2013 NFL Draft , he was selected in the 3rd round as the 69th player of the Arizona Cardinals .

2013

In his rookie year he was used as Free Safety and was soon able to establish himself as a starter . Already in week 3 in the game against the New Orleans Saints he caught his first NFL interception. Due to a torn cruciate ligament and a torn outer ligament, he was out for the rest of the 2013 season from December.

2014

At the beginning of the 2014 season, Mathieu missed three games because of the ligament injury from the previous season. He then played the remaining 13 games and scored 39 tackles, one interception , four pass defenses and one fumble recovery.

2015

In the offseason for the new season Mathieu changed his position from Free Safety to Cornerback . But also in 2015 the bad luck with injuries remained true to him and he tore his cruciate ligament again , so that after 15 encounters, the season was over for him. Nevertheless, he was called to the Pro Bowl because of his good performance .

2016

On 2. August 2016 Mathieu signed a contract extension of five years with a total content of 62.5 million US dollars . During the season, the vulnerable defensive back had bad luck with injuries and injured his shoulder in week 8 against the Carolina Panthers . He then only played 2 of the next 6 games until he was finally put on the Injured Reserve List and his season was officially over.

2017

In the 2017 season Mathieu was a starter in all games. He got 78 tackles, seven pass defenses, a sack and two interceptions.

Houston Texans

In March 2018, Mathieu signed a $ 7 million one-year deal with the Houston Texans .

Kansas City Chiefs

On March 14, 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs signed Mathieu.
