In the first and second main round, which was played like the third in the knockout system , the teams from the GDR league and qualified district cup representatives took part. From the third main round, the ten teams from the GDR Oberliga were added. In these three rounds, the district representatives had a home advantage over higher-class teams. The fourth main round was carried out with return games. After the fourth main round, the last five teams then determined the cup winners in a final tournament.
