The men's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 16th time in the 1985/86 season. The SC Empor Rostock successfully defended their title from the previous year at the final tournament in their own hall. With the double of the championship and cup win of the Rostockers, SC Leipzig secured itself with second place, participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup .

The teams from the handball GDR league and the qualified district representatives took part in the first main round . From the second main round, the five company sports communities or sports communities from the handball GDR league were added. The draw was carried out in both rounds according to territorial aspects as far as possible, before a free drawing was made from the 3rd main round. After the four main rounds, which were played in the knockout system , the best four teams in a qualifying tournament also played out the participants for the final tournament in the knockout system. In all rounds, the district representatives had a home advantage over higher-class teams. In the final tournament, which was played in the "everyone against everyone" mode, the winner of the qualification tournament met the five seeded sports club teams from the GDR upper league.
