Mike Fuhrig (born April 17, 1965 in Schlema ) is a former German handball player .

Fuhrig played for 14 years for long-time Bundesliga club SG Wallau / Massenheim . With this team he won the IHF Cup (forerunner of the EHF Cup). With his club, he took part twice in the Euro City Cup and once in the EHF Cup . Because of his merits, he was made an honorary captain.

From 2007 Fuhrig was a trainer for SG Wallau / Massenheim, which was renamed SG Wallau in 2008. Two years later, Wallau formed the HSG FrankfurtRheinMain with several clubs in the region , and he took over as coach. In February 2010, Fuhrig and the HSG parted ways by mutual agreement. In 2010 Fuhrig took over the women's team at SG 09 Kirchhof . In March 2012, his contract was terminated. In the 2012/13 season he coached the upper division SG Bruchköbel. Then Fuhrig took over HSG Maintal, with which he was promoted to the state league in 2014. HSG Maintal separated from him in December 2014. From summer 2015 he was a trainer for the women's team at TSV Eintracht Böddiger. Since the 2017/18 season, Fuhrig has been looking after the North Hessian national division HSG Baunatal.

Fuhrig played 165 international matches for the German men's national handball team . He could be used flexibly in different playing positions. The trained backcourt middle player occasionally played on the backcourt left and later regularly as a circle runner .

successes

Fuhrig won two German championships with SG Wallau / Massenheim (1992, 1993) and two cup winners (1993, 1994). At club level, his greatest success was winning the IHF Cup (1992). As captain and "defense chief", he made a decisive contribution to the success of his club.

His international career has taken him to numerous major tournaments. With the GDR team he took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul (7th place). In 1986 he was able to achieve third place with this team at the World Cup in Switzerland, in 1990 he was seventh in Czechoslovakia, and he played for the DHB at the 1993 World Cup in Sweden (6th place). Mike Fuhrig comes from a sports family. His sister took part in rowing at the Olympic Games and his father is still active in the table tennis class at TTV Auerhammer.
