The Sportgemeinschaft 1909 Kirchhof eV is a sports club from Kirchhof , a district of Melsungen in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse . He became known nationwide through the success of his women's handball team.
The Union
The SG 09 Kirchhof is the largest association in Kirchhof with almost 400 members. The association offers the departments handball , table tennis , tennis , gymnastics and singing . The handball division made the club known nationwide.
Handball players
In 1966 the chairman of the association Fritz Gießler and the handball department head Hans Schomberg decide to found a women's handball team. The two become active and win Karl Kuppstadt from MT Melsungen . He is supposed to take over the task of the trainer and at the same time brings three of his five daughters to the green-whites. Hans Schomberg spontaneously pays for the first set of jerseys.
In its first season in 1966/67, the SG won the district championship. In 1970 the team rose to the district class, became runner-up straight away and qualified for the association league in 1971. In the 1973/74 season they also reached second place in the association league, making the jump into the newly founded Regionalliga Südwest (North Season). The Kirchhöferinnen now play against such renowned clubs as TSV Rot-Weiß Auerbach , TV Lützellinden , TV Vorwärts Frankfurt , PSV Grünweiß Frankfurt and VfB Gießen . 20-year-old Gerlinde Dehnhardt had a fatal accident on the way to training. At the end of the season, the SG Kirchhof as bottom of the table with 4:22 points must immediately relegate.
Two years later, in 1976/77, after winning the Hessen Championship - now with all five of the coach's daughters - the SG is back in the Regionalliga Südwest. And the team managed to march through to the Bundesliga. In 1977/78 they managed to stay seventh out of nine teams with 12:20 points. A year later, however, 6:30 points are not enough to keep the class. Since 1979 SG 09 Kirchhof has played continuously in the Regionalliga Südwest.
20 years later, in the 1998/99 season, a new generation wins the championship of the Regionalliga Südwest and promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga South . In 2003/04, as the second division champions, the SG even made the leap into the 1st Bundesliga , which they belonged to for two years.
After two relegations in a row, the 1st team played in the Regionalliga Südwest in 2007/08, where they were champions with a 13-point lead and returned to the 2nd Bundesliga . In the 2008/09 season, Kirchhof took 12th place, making the team third class again. In the summer of 2012 Kirchhof returned to the 2nd Bundesliga. After two seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga, Kirchhof went into the third division.
The 2nd women's team plays in the regional league and the 3rd team plays in the district league. Since 2005 there has been a cooperation with the men's Bundesliga club MT Melsungen : all girls play in Kirchhof and all boys in Melsungen.
