history

The gymnastics club Vorwärts Frankfurt was founded in 1882 and operated as the gymnastics club Vorwärts Bockenheim until 1951. The initiator at that time was the gymnast Christian Meller , who also suggested adding the term “forward” in the name. The Turngesellschaft Rödelheim was founded as early as 1874, which is why in 1999 the club's 125th anniversary was celebrated. The association has around 1,050 members. In Frankfurt-Rödelheim, the TGS has its own large sports facility with a newly built clubhouse and its own gym. The sporting activities are spread over a total of ten different departments.

The handball players of TV Vorwärts

Between 1958 and 1964, the handball players of TV Vorwärts won the Southwest German indoor handball championship seven times in a row . From 1967 to 1969 three more titles followed, so that the TV women come to a total of ten southwest championships. This also means that Vorwärts took part in the final round of the German championship ten times . After having failed as the last one in the preliminary round in the previous three years, they celebrated the greatest success in the club's history on February 18, 1961 in Ketsch in northern Baden . In the semifinals, the TV defeated the German champions of 1958 and 1959, Eimsbütteler TV , 3-2 and moved into the final against the western champions RSV Mülheim . This one had to admit defeat 4: 5 only after two extra times.

In 1962 and 1963 they survived the preliminary round, but were defeated in the semi-finals to SC Greven 09 with 0: 2 and a year later to Eimsbütteler TV with 1: 4. 1964 remained the Frankfurt women the last place in their preliminary group. In 1965 and 1966, Südwest Ludwigshafen and TSG Kaiserslautern had to be given the title of Southwest Champion. Three more Südwest titles followed, but the final round of the German championship always ended immediately after the first game: in 1967 with 2:14 against Eimsbütteler TV, in 1968 with 4:18 against SC Union 03 Hamburg and in 1968 with 4 : 18 Bayer Leverkusen . After that, the predominance of TV Vorwärts in southwest German women's handball ended and other clubs such as PSV Grünweiß Frankfurt and TSV Rot-Weiß Auerbach determined the action from then on. In the 2007/08 season the TGS Vorwärts took third place in the District A Frankfurt with 20:12 points.
