The SC Greven 09 is a sports club in Greven (Westphalia), which became known nationwide mainly through the success of its women's handball team. It was founded in 1909. Today over 900 members are organized in the football , handball , Kung Fu and Nordic Walking departments.
Handball
The Greven handball players drew national attention in 1960 when they won the West German championship for the first time. At the final round of the German championship in Münster, a third place jumped out after losing just 3: 4 in the semifinals to the West runner-up RSV Mülheim and winning the placement game against Eimsbütteler TV 2: 1. Two years later, the big surprise: TV 09 had eliminated the reigning German champions RSV Mülheim in the fight for the West German championship . In the final round of the German championship , the 2-0 semi-final victory over TV Vorwärts Frankfurt even made it into the final, which was held on February 25, 1962 in the Schöneberg sports hall in Berlin (playing time 2 × 15 minutes). And the SC 09 was favored, because the opponent, the SSC Südwest 1947 , only took part in the finals as Berlin runner-up because the organizing regional association was also able to send its championship runner-up against the five regional champions into the race. In the final, the Greveners also seemed well on their way to winning their first German championship title. At the break they led 3-2. In the second half, however, nothing came together in the attack and 09 ("young, fast, but not physically strong enough", so the comment in "Mannheimer Morgen") had to admit defeat 3: 6 in the end. From 1963 to 1969 Bayer Leverkusen dominated the handball scene in the west and won the western championship seven times in a row. In 1970 the Grevenians succeeded again for the first time to outdo Leverkusen, but the lot led the team to the southern champions 1. FC Nürnberg , who triumphed 11: 7 and then secured the German championship title against Holstein Kiel . When the double-track Bundesliga was introduced in 1975/76 , Greven was initially not there. In 1977, however, the rise succeeded. 1978/1979 almost made it into the final round for the "German", but 28: 8 points were not enough to win the two top teams of those years, TuS Eintracht Minden (31: 5) and Bayer Leverkusen (30: 6), to outstrip. The pairing of the final for the German championship was then - almost logically - Bayer Leverkusen against TuS Eintracht Minden (15:14). 1983 then the relegation from the Bundesliga . From 1986 to 1989 they played again for three years in the newly introduced 2. Bundesliga North before they had to return to the regional league . 13 years later, in the 2001/02 season, he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . After several successive relegations to the Oberliga Westfalen, the team was dissolved as bottom of the table at the end of the 2014/15 season. The reserve is now officially run as the first team.

The division with the largest number of members is the club's football department, which includes more than half of all paying members. In addition to 24 youth teams from G to A youth, Greven 09 also has three senior and one senior men's team. However, none of these teams play higher class.
After the Second World War , the soccer team made it to the top division at the time, the Landesliga Westfalen , where they played on a par with clubs such as Borussia Dortmund , FC Schalke 04 , VfL Bochum , SpVgg Erkenschwick and Westfalia Herne . After three years, it was relegated in 1949. In 1954, the SC Greven 09 returned to the state league, but missed qualification for the newly created Verbandsliga Westfalen in 1956 and continued to play in the now only fourth-class state league until 1969. In the following decades, the Greven footballers mostly commuted between the district league and district league A. In the seasons 1988/89, 1990/91, from 1996 to 2001 and in the 2004/05 season, SC Greven 09 played again in the state league. Since the promotion in 2015, the team has been competing in the district league.
