The Eimsbütteler Turnverband (ETV) is a sports club in Hamburg, which also became known nationwide through the success of its women's handball team. With ten German championships, Eimsbütteler TV is the fifth most successful German women's handball club after HC Leipzig (21 national titles, including 15 in the GDR), Progress Weissenfels (15), 1. FC Nürnberg (13) and Bayer Leverkusen (12) .

The handball players of the ETV

The ETV handball players first attracted attention before the Second World War , when they secured three championship titles on the large field between 1934 and 1937. Even after 1945, large field handball remained one of Eimsbüttel's strengths, which is clearly underlined by the title wins four to six in 1956, 1966 and 1967.

But the Hamburg women were also immediately part of the national elite in indoor handball. In 1958 the German indoor handball championship was held for the first time . The champions of the regional associations South, West, North and Berlin as well as two representatives of the organizing regional association Southwest had qualified for the final round on March 15 and 16, 1958 in the winter sports hall in Frankfurt am Main . And in the end, Eimsbüttel TV came out on top. The results (with a playing time of 2 × 15 minutes) speak for themselves: ETV - SV Phönix Ludwigshafen 10: 1, ETV - SSC Südwest 1947 7: 1; Semi-finals: ETV - Post SV Munich 3: 1; Final: ETV - Düsseldorfer SV 04 6-0. And the "Frankfurter Rundschau" got into raptures in its Monday edition under the heading "Eimsbüttel's girls were class": "There was no doubt about the favorite role of the slim Hamburg women in the group games on Saturday ... In the game against Phoenix, the aces Christa appeared I (Warns) and Christa II (Zacher) only after a quarter of an hour when the second storm got stuck several times. They then made short work of it. There was only one Christa Warns in this tournament ... With six goals she was also the top scorer of the Saturdays. Against Berlin she chased the ball into the net three times within a minute. " or: "... Christa Warns, the dark, slender national player, whose goal throws were a feast for the eyes. Like Rastelli, she juggled the ball, powerfully, in a pike jump she then jumped through the air and then the bell rang ..."

A year later, the Hamburg women repeated their success of the previous year. The final against Post SV Munich on March 1, 1959 in Hamburg saw 1,000 spectators. In the first half, ETV took the lead 3-0, and in the end it was 3-1. The results: ETV - Post SV Munich 2: 2, ETV - TV Vorwärts Frankfurt 6: 1; Semi-finals: ETV - RSV Mülheim 5: 2; Final: ETV - Post SV Munich 3: 1.

1. FC Nürnberg prevented the ETV handball players' title hat-trick in 1960 when national player Lydia Bauer converted the decisive seven-meter throw to a narrow 3-2 victory in the final second in the semi-finals. After the final 1: 2 against SC Greven 09 , ETV stayed in 4th place. 1961 - also thanks to two discarded seven meters - again a 2: 3 in the semifinals, this time against the southwest champion TV Vorwärts Frankfurt . Since the placement game against SSC Südwest was won 7-2 in 1947 , they traveled back north from the north Baden ketch with a third place in their luggage . In the semi-finals in Berlin in 1962 , the ETV experienced a Waterloo, because against the blatant outsider SSC Südwest 1947 they were already 4-0 behind when they switched sides, and in the end they lost 6-2.

Then on March 11, 1963 in Frankfurt am Main, the third title win in the hall (and ninth overall). After a 4: 1 in the semifinals against TV Vorwärts Frankfurt , the ETV players fought a hot battle in the final with Bayer Leverkusen . At the break, Leverkusen led 2-1, at the end of regular time it was 4: 4, and after extra time was over, the Hamburg women were ahead 7: 4.

In 1965 a change of mode was announced. The German champion was no longer determined on a weekend - with a shortened playing time. First a preliminary round game was played, the winner of which advanced to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals contested the final. The home right - like in the cup - was drawn. On March 21, 1965, the final took place in Hamburg in front of 1,500 spectators. And then Bayer Leverkusen reciprocated for the previous year's defeat . ETV had been able to make up a deficit three times and at 4: 3 at break everything still seemed open, but in the end the West Germans had the upper hand with 7: 3. In 1966, Leverkusen and Eimsbüttel met in the semi-finals. And Bayer won again, this time 8-5.

In 1967 the Eimsbüttel team had an easy game: 14: 2 in the preliminary round against TV Vorwärts Frankfurt . In the semifinals it went to the southern champions 1. FC Nürnberg . With a wafer-thin 7: 6 they qualified for the final in Hamburg. In the final against Bayer Leverkusen , ETV was already leading 5-2 at halftime, and in the end the fourth indoor title (and tenth overall) was won with 12-5.

An era comes to an end

After the last title win against Bayer Leverkusen , the heyday of Eimsbüttel TV was over. The final round of the German championship in 1968 was held for the first time without the ETV, which had to cede the northern title to SC Union 03 Hamburg . And with an 11: 8 win over 1. FC Nürnberg, he at least ensured that the championship trophy stayed in Hamburg . In the following years, others were ahead of the game in the games for the Northern Championship: 1969 Union Hamburg , 1970 and 1971 Holstein Kiel , 1972 Union Hamburg , 1973 Hamburg TS , 1974 Holstein Kiel and 1975 SV Rot-Weiß Kiebitzzeile . And when the two-track Bundesliga was introduced in the 1975/76 season, the northern representatives were called SV Rot-Weiß Kiebitzzeile, Holstein Kiel, Police SV Osnabrück and SC Germania List .

Comeback in the 1990s

Exactly 22 years after the last title win, the Eimsbütteler TV reported back: In 1989 ETV rose to the Regionalliga Nord and held its own there - from 1992 in the new Regionalliga Nordost - for nine years. Although it was never enough to achieve an absolute top position, the relegation zone was always left well behind. Then in 1998 the withdrawal from the third division took place.

The ETV handball players today

While other traditional clubs such as TV Lützellinden or TuS Walle Bremen have long since disappeared from the scene, and even if it hasn't been to the top nationally for four decades, the fire is still far from extinguished at the fifth most successful German women's handball club. The first women's team has been competing in the (fifth-class) Hamburg League since the 2010/11 season . In the 2011/2012 season, the women achieved the title of "Hamburg runner-up". In addition, the ETV handball department provides several youth teams and a mixed mini-team, plus some men's teams.
