Barbara Scott Young, Baroness Young of Old Scone (born April 8, 1948 in Perth ) is a British politician (temporarily non-attached, member of the Labor Party until 2000 and from 2015 ) and life peeress , who previously worked in the healthcare sector.

life and career

Young was born in Perth in April 1948 . She spent her childhood in Scotland and attended the Perth Academy . She later studied Classical Studies and Commerce at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Strathclyde .

From 1973 to 1978 she was Senior Administrator of the Greater Glasgow Health Board and from 1978 to 1979 Director of Planning and Development for St Thomas' Health District . Young was District General Administrator of the NW District Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster AHA from 1979 to 1982 . She was District Administrator of Haringey HA from 1982 to 1985 and District General Manager of Paddington & North Kensington HA from 1985 to 1988 . She moved to London after serving in health care management for the Glasgow Health Board .

Young was the District General Manager of Parkside HA from 1988 to 1991. From 1991 to 1998 she was Chief Executive of the RSPB and its Vice President ( Vice-President was) since 2000. From 1998 to 2000 Chairman ( Chairman ) of English Nature .

She was Chief Executive of the Environment Agency from 2000 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010 she was Chair of the Care Quality Commission . Young has been a member of the Climate Change Adaptation Committee since 2009 .

At the BBC , she was Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors from 1998 to 2000 .

Young was Vice Chairman of the BBC , a member of the board of directors of AWG plc , a major UK water company, chief executive of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and a number of local health authorities including the Parkside Health Authority . In 2010, Young was named Chancellor of Cranfield University .

She is also a member of the trustee of the charity organization Imperial Healthcare . From 1985 to 1988 Young was a member of the BBC General Advisory Council . She was president of the Institute of Health Services Management from 1987 to 1988 . She has been the patron of the Institute of Ecological and Environment Management since 1993 . From 1994 to 1996 she was a member of the Committee of Secretary of State for the Environment's Going for Green Initiative and from 1995 to 2000 the UK Round Table on Sustainability . From 1995 to 1997 she was a member of the Commission on the Future of the Voluntary Sector and from 1996 to 1997 of the Committee on the Public Understanding of Science .

She joined Diabetes UK in November 2010 .

Membership in the House of Lords

Young was promoted to Life Peer on November 4, 1997 as Baroness Young of Old Scone, of Old Scone in Perth and Kinross . In the House of Lords she first sat for the Labor Party , which she left in 2000. Since then she has been sitting as an independent ( non-affiliated ). She gave her inaugural address on December 4, 1997.

She cites the environment, health and social welfare, broadcasting, equality and rights as topics of political interest.

Their presence on meeting days was initially in the medium range and then fell sharply. In the period since 2001 their attendance has been irregular.

Honors

Young became an honorary member of the Linnean Society of London in 2002 . She is also the holder of several honorary doctorates . In 1995 she became a Doctor of University (Hon DUniv) of the University of Stirling . She was honored with the same title two years later by the University of Hertfordshire . The Cranfield University honored with a Young Doctor of Science (Hon DSc).

She also holds honorary degrees from the University of St Andrews , the University of Aberdeen and the University of York (all three in 2000), as well as from the Open University (2001) and Anglia Ruskin University (2008). In 1971 she became an associate of the Institute of Health Service Management .
