The club was founded on March 25, 1861 as the "Turnverein Kaiserslautern". On August 17, 1888, the gymnastics club and the local “Turngesellschaft 1886” merged to form the “Turnverein Kaiserslautern / Vereinigte Turnerschaft aV”. The first gymnastics home on Jahnstrasse (today Am Turnerheim ) was inaugurated 15 years later . With the outbreak of the First World War , gymnastics at the site came to a standstill. From 1918 to 1924 gymnastics clubs were banned by the occupying power of France . The Turnerheim served as a location for the French armed forces from 1918 to June 1930. As early as 1919, the Sandow Sports Club, the Free Gymnastics Association in 1906, the Gymnastics Society in 1909 and the Minstrel Club merged to form the Free Gymnastics and Sports Association Kaiserslautern. The Buchenloch sports complex was opened up in 1923 by the new association. After the withdrawal of the French troops, the Turnerheim in Jahnstrasse was renovated from 1930 to 1933 and re-inaugurated with a ceremony. In 1933 the name was changed to “Men's Gymnastics and Sports Club” for political reasons. In 1938 the gymnastics club 1861 Kaiserslautern and the men's gymnastics and sports club merged to form the new popular sports club "Turn- und Sportgemeinde 1861 Kaiserslautern" and formed departments in gymnastics , fencing , bowling , fistball , handball , hockey , light and heavy athletics . From 1939 to 1945 all sporting activities were suspended due to the Second World War, during which the gymnastics center and all playing areas were destroyed. In 1946 the club was re-established under the name “Sportverein Kaiserslautern” (SVK). Four years later, the name was changed back to its current name and, after the club's assets were released, the Buchenloch sports complex was rebuilt, with the festival hall being foregone.
