The Handballspielgemeinschaft Freiburg is a sports club from Freiburg im Breisgau . It developed from the handball department of the Freie Turnerschaft eV and the handball department of the Freiburg Football Club e. V. In 1999 the HSG Freiburg set up its own business under the direction of the 1st chairman Thomas Hohwieler and his deputy Horst Betz. Today the HSG Freiburg has over 350 members. Since then, youth work, to which the HSG attaches particular importance, has been continuously improved. Today the HSG Freiburg has 6 active teams and 11 youth teams. Over 150 children and young people are introduced to handball by their youth coaches between one and four times a week.

Women

The first women's team of the HSG Freiburg made it into the handball regional league south in 2009. The team finished 8th in the 2009/10 season and thus played in the 3rd league in the 2010/2011 season and placed 7th. After eight years in the 3rd league , they became champions of the season south and were promoted to the 2nd handball Bundesliga for the 2019/20 season . Since 2019 the team has referred to itself as the Red Sparrows .

Women II

The second women's team of the HSG Freiburg with coach Benjamin Thoma were champions in the Landesliga Süd and were promoted to the Südbadenliga in the 2013/2014 season. In the 2014/2015 season you could assert yourself in this league.
