The 2015/16 season of the 3rd division in women's handball was the sixth in its history. The unofficial North, East, South and West German championship and qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga were played in four seasons . For the first time only 48 teams took part.
mode
The 3rd women's division consists of four seasons, the composition of which was based on geographical factors. A double round tournament is played in each season . The four season winners are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. The three last-placed teams are relegated to the corresponding major leagues . Deviating from this general stipulation, there may be other promotion and relegation scenarios that are bindingly regulated in the DHB's rules of play .
qualification
Due to the reduction of the squadrons to 12 teams each, only 6 of the 12 league champions are promoted. The champions of the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg SC Korb are directly qualified . In addition, the master of the Oberliga Westfalen HSG Menden-Lendringsen waived the possible promotion and the associated qualification game against the master of the Oberliga Nordsee HSG Hude-Falkenburg , which is thus directly qualified for the 3rd division. The champions of the upper league Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein TSV Altenholz also renounced promotion and the game against the upper division champions of Lower Saxony TuS Hollenstedt , who also rose directly.
The Oberliga Mittelrhein and Niederrhein play the qualified team in a preliminary decision.

Relegation relegation
Due to the registration results for the 2016/17 season, a relegation of the tenth place was dispensed with. All three registered tenth places will play in the third division for the coming season. The tenth place in the North Relay TuS Hollenstedt does not participate in the 3rd division. Nevertheless, there will be precautionary relegation games between the eleventh-placed HSV Solingen-Gräfrath and HSG Sulzbach / Leidersbach in the event that possible promoted players from the upper league should forego participation in the third division.
