The SC Markranstädt eV is a German sports club from the Saxon city of Markranstädt near Leipzig. He is known nationwide for his women's handball team, which belonged to the 2nd Bundesliga until the 2008/09 season . After the insolvency of Spielbetriebs-GmbH on June 30, 2009, a new beginning was dared in the Sachsenliga. After two promotions, the 1st team has been playing in the 3rd division, East Season, since the 2016/17 season.

The club was founded on November 17, 1998. Through the formation of a syndicate with Turbine Leipzig and the takeover of the Leipzig regional league team, games began in the regional league in the 1999/2000 season . The Saxons were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South in the first season: First they secured the relay championship of the Regionalliga , Season 2. Then they sat in the relegation against the counterpart of the other season, VfL Sindelfingen (20:15 , 21:25).

There followed a few years in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga, in which the club always finished in midfield. Since 2004, when the Bundesliga promotion was decided in play-off games of the best four of the two second division seasons, the "piranhas", as they call themselves, have been there. Each time they reached the final, but also failed each time, most recently in 2009 at the traditional opponent SVG Celle.

The club plays its home games in the Markranstädt sports center.

Shortly after the failure in the final of the play-off games, it was announced on June 23, 2009 that the club is insolvent and will compete in the league from the 2009/10 season. As a result, numerous players had to leave the club and new players who signed up for the 2009/2010 season had to reorient themselves so that they could continue to play professional handball elsewhere. Among them was the former goalkeeper of the German national team Turid Arndt , who was supposed to come from SVG Celle and now moved to the North Vice-Champion SG Handball Rosengarten .
