The handball players of the SV Union

Since 1991/92 the Union handball players have belonged to the 2nd Bundesliga , for which they had qualified as runner-up in the (second) GDR League South. With one exception: In 1998/99 the Wildcats , as the team also calls themselves, played in the 1st Bundesliga for one season . After a promising debut with fifth place, the first few years in the 2nd Bundesliga were marked by the relegation battle, which one passed with a lot of luck and the withdrawal of other clubs. For example, in 1992/93 5:35 points were enough to keep the class, as the clearly better placed Bayer Leverkusen II (18:22) and BSG Halloren Halle (16:24) withdrew their teams. After a continuous increase in 1997/98 as runner-up they were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga , which they had to leave after a year. In 2001/02 the Wildcats were almost relegated to the regional league , but they could assert themselves in the relegation games against the South representative TV Ortenberg (25:23, 18:15). Since then, the team has been regularly represented in the top group. In the 2004/05 season the promotion mode was changed. With 47: 9 points the SV Union were champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North , but in the promotion play-offs the team was defeated by the Thuringian HC . Since then, the Wildcats have been represented four times in the promotion play-offs. In the 2017/18 season, the 2nd table was again promoted to the 1st Bundesliga. A year later, the women's team went into the second division. In 2020 the team managed to rise again.
