history

In 1922, under the name of SV Frisia, they were promoted to what was then the first-class western district league and over the next few years passed local rivals VfB . In 1925 and 1927 Frisia was runner-up in their season, before the team had to relegate a year later due to the league reform. After the merger to form Oldenburger SC, the club settled on Alexanderstraße. In the meantime slipped into the third class, the promotion to the second class district class succeeded in 1936. Seven years later, VfL was included in the Oldenburg-Friesland group of the first-class Gauliga Weser-Ems , where they lost to Wilhelmshaven 05 with 25: 0.

After the Second World War , VfL reached the newly created second-rate amateur league Lower Saxony- West in 1949 , where fourth place was achieved in 1953. Two years later, VfL had to relegate to Amateur League 1 . With numerous young players who had advanced to the semi-finals of the Lower Saxony A youth championship in 1959, they were promoted back to the amateur league in 1962. There the team sensationally secured the championship and later even qualified for the newly created Regionalliga Nord .

However, the jump into the regional league was too big and VfL had to relegate in the end due to the poorer goal quotient compared to SC Concordia Hamburg . The highlight of the 1963/64 season was the derby against VfB, where VfL achieved a 3: 3 in front of 20,000 spectators despite a 1: 3 deficit. After VfB poached numerous top performers from VfL, the latter was promptly passed on to the Association League North in the 1964/65 national league season. Three years later, the team failed in the promotion round.

In 1969, they were promoted to the third-class Lower Saxony regional league , where VfL did not get beyond mediocrity. In 1975 the team was relegated to the sport, but remained in the class due to the rise of Eintracht Nordhorn and the amateurs of Eintracht Braunschweig . With only 2:58 points, VfL went down a year later and in 1980 even slipped into the Weser / Ems regional league . It was only four years later that the former VfB player and coach Helmut Mrosla made it to the Landesliga West .

In 1994 VfL qualified for the Lower Saxony League, from which he was relegated two years later. It was not until 2004 that they returned to the Lower Saxon House of Lords with a 7-6 win on penalties over SC Twistringen . Five years later, the team became champions of the Lower Saxony- West Oberliga , but missed promotion to the regional league in relegation. In 2010 the club moved the team back to the Landesliga Weser / Ems and rose three years later to the top division again.

In the 2017/18 season , the Oldenburg team only became runner-up due to the poorer goal difference against Lupo Martini Wolfsburg and qualified for the promotion round to the Regionalliga Nord. With a 4-0 win on the last match day at Brinkumer SV , they were promoted to the regional league. But as in 1963, the jump was too big. In the regional league season 2018/19 , VfL could not get a point away and were relegated as the penultimate.

The home ground of the VfL footballers is the Hans-Prull-Stadion on Alexanderstrasse . The club's own facility was opened on June 2, 1929 with a game against local rivals VfB Oldenburg. After the game was originally played on natural grass , the playing surface was replaced by artificial grass in 1980 . This was renewed in 1994, 2006 and 2019. The stadium has a capacity of 3,000 spectators. Since 2003 there has been a grandstand for around 250 spectators, including 176 seats. In the 1963/64 regional league season, VfL moved to the Donnerschwee stadium .

History of the VfL Oldenburg Knights

In May 2010 Florian Rückeshäuser and Christoph Hoppe founded the Oldenburg Knights and thus succeeded the first American football team in Oldenburg, the Fighting Knights. Originally started at VfL Oldenburg with 12 players, the Knights have already grown to a strength of over 300 players (including youth) and thus the third strongest department in the entire club.

In the first year, due to the low number of players, no team could be registered in the league, so the Knights played in the first year with a syndicate together with and under the flag of the Cloppenburg Titans in the league. The league operation started in 2011 in the 5th division of the AFCV-N and the season was successfully concluded with the title of runner-up. In 2012 the Knights started playing in the 4th division with the aim of staying up. The goal was achieved with two wins, three draws and five defeats. The 2013 season ended with the Knights championship in Group West. For the 2014 season, the license for the regional league was applied for.

After the relegation situation was decided in the previous season, the men were also able to compete in the league in a sporting way in 2015, while two players switched to the German champions New Yorker Lions . Head coach for the 2016 season is co-founder Florian Rückeshäuser. In 2016 the Oldenburg Knights play a season game in front of 1,300 spectators in the Marschweg Stadium . In the same year, the B-youth won the championship again and the C-youth completed their first friendly matches.

All men's games have been held in the Marschweg Stadium since 2017. The Knights secured the class and formed a second men's team called "Cavaliers". The youth secured two championships and the division grew to 300 active members.

In the 2019 season, the first men's team under head coach Markus Meckes became champion in the Regionalliga Nord and took part in the playoffs for promotion to GFL 2. However, the two qualifying games against the Berlin Adler and the Assindia Cardinals could not be won, so that the team will continue to compete in the Regionalliga in 2020.

Youth work

Already in the second year (2012), the A-Jugend (Youngsters) was founded under the direction of head coach Holger Völling. After a very good 2013 season, the team was promoted to the youth regional league. The excellent training work in Oldenburg produces more and more players who make it into the Lower Saxony "Mustangs" selection or the German youth national team. Also in 2013, the B-Jugend (Yeomen) was founded, which, under the direction of its head coach Daniel Kregel, won the league championship in 2015. The youngest child in the youth work is a C-youth (Squires), who will play their first friendly matches in the 2016 season.
