The New Yorker Lions , up to and including the 2010 GFL season Braunschweig Lions , are an American football team from Braunschweig . You have been playing in the German Football League without interruption since the 1994 season and are German record champions with twelve German Bowl victories. The first division team has been operated by FFC Sportmanagement GmbH & Co. KG since the 2011 season, which has been owned by New Yorker since November 2011 . The amateur and junior area of American football and cheerleading are in the 1. FFC Braunschweig e. V. organized.

history

About 30 people responded to a newspaper call on October 23, 1986, in which two Braunschweig schoolchildren were looking for other people interested in a football team. The founding of the Lions and the start of gaming operations took place in 1987.

In 1994 they were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga, today's German Football League (GFL), in which they have been playing ever since. After only 3 years in the GFL, the first German Bowl title was won in 1997. Since then, the Braunschweig Lions have been in every final of the German Bowl up to and including 2008 and were able to win it 7 times (1997, 1998, 1999, 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 ) decide for themselves. After three German titles in a row, the Lions lost every final of the German Bowl, sometimes very narrowly (2003: 36:37 vs. Hamburg Blue Devils ). Most often they competed against their arch rivals, the Hamburg Blue Devils. After another defeat in the final of the 2004 season against the Berlin Adler (10: 7), the negative series on October 8, 2005 with a 31:28 win against the Hamburg Blue Devils in the German Bowl XXVII in the AWD-Arena in Hanover be terminated. In the 2006 season they were able to successfully defend their title against the Marburg Mercenaries . However, they renounced the participation in the European Football League made possible by winning the German Bowl .

With a 26:21 victory in the semi-finals of the GFL season 2007 , which was won on September 22, 2007 against the Marburg Mercenaries, the Lions were the only GFL team to have reached the eleventh final in a row. The German Bowl XXIX, the German championship in American football, against the Stuttgart Scorpions won the Lions 27: 6 and have thus won their sixth German championship. This year, for the first time in the club's history, they remained undefeated for a whole season.

The Braunschweig Lions reached the final again in the 2008 season and competed against the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in the German Bowl XXX on September 27, 2008 , winning it 20:14. The German Bowl XXX took place in the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt am Main .

The Braunschweig winning streak broke off in the 2009 season when the Lions failed to reach the play-offs for the first time in 14 years with just three wins in the regular season. In the last place of the Northern Division they had to admit defeat to the promoted Assindia Cardinals in a direct point comparison . Since the Hamburg Blue Devils announced their withdrawal from the GFL shortly before the start of the season, only five teams played in the northern group this year and the last, the Braunschweig Lions, did not need to be relegated .

The 2010 season was not very successful for the Lions either. Although they reached fourth place in the table and thus the playoffs, but in the first game of the playoffs they faced the first-placed southern group. The game Marburg Mercenaries against Braunschweig Lions ended with 31:21 and thus participation in the playoffs for Braunschweig was over.

The 2011 season was even worse for the Braunschweiger Löwen. At the end of the season, with only four wins, only sixth place in the table could be fought. Only the Assindia Cardinals won fewer points and placed behind them. As the penultimate of the group, participation in the relegation could at least be prevented.

In the 2012 season , in which eight teams played each group for the first time, the Lions could only conquer sixth place in the table in the northern group at the end of the season. The team ended up in the no man's land of places five to seven between playoff and relegation battle.

The 2013 Lions were back on the road to success with the pre-season signing of Troy Tomlin . With just one defeat out of 14 games, the Braunschweig team initially secured the title of the GFL Group North. After play-off victories against the Rhein-Neckar Bandits and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, the team finally reached the final of the German Bowl for the first time since 2008. Here the Lions in Berlin won the eighth German championship in the club's history after a narrow 35:34 win against the Dresden Monarchs .

In the 2014 season , the team achieved a perfect season for the first time , which they crowned by winning the ninth German championship at the German Bowl XXXVI . The 2014 European Football League season in the Big6 European Football League was less successful . After the group phase could be won, the team lost in the final of the Eurobowl XXVIII to the team of the Berlin Adler.

The Lions achieved victory in the North Season again in the 2015 season with 11 wins and 1 loss. In the same year the Lions won the Eurobowl XXIX of the Big6 European Football League . In addition, the Lions also reached the German Bowl (German Bowl XXXVII) and won it on October 10, 2015 in Berlin against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns with 41:31.

In the 2016 season, the Lions again won the Eurobowl XXX of the Big6 European Football League . Likewise, the 1st place in the north relay was again achieved with 11 wins, 2 draws and one defeat. On October 8, 2016, the Lions won the German Bowl XXXVIII against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns with 31:20.

Name change

After the 2010 season it was announced that, due to the license conditions of the GFL, a new operating company will manage the Lions' economic fortunes from the 2011 season. In the course of the negotiations between the previous and the new operating company, no agreement could be reached on the purchase of the rights to the name Braunschweig Lions and the logo, so that the team had to be renamed and the logo had to be changed.

For the 2011 and 2012 seasons, the Hygia fitness studio was initially won as a name sponsor. In March 2011 it was announced that the fashion company New Yorker, which has supported the Lions as a sponsor since 1988, could now also be won as a new name sponsor. Another change was made possible after Hygia's voluntary withdrawal from sponsorship. Thus, as in 1995, the Lions have been running as New York Lions since the 2011 season.
