The Big6 European Football League , or Big6 for short , is a sports competition for American football club teams at European level that has been held annually since 2014. The Big6 final is the Eurobowl , which has been held since 1986 and was integrated into the European Football League competition before 2014 .

history

Vienna Vikings against New Yorker Lions Braunschweig on April 24, 2016 in Vienna

With the founding of IFAF Europe, the European subsidiary of IFAF , the previous European American Football Association EFAF was to be replaced. At the same time, in 2014 IFAF installed the IFAF Europe Champions League competition for European club teams. Until then, the European Football League (EFL) was the competition in which the supposedly best teams in Europe competed against each other. The EFL was continued parallel to the IFAF Europe Champions League. Officially, this was not organized by the EFAF, but by the participating teams and their national associations. In order to make the competition more attractive and to be more fair to the different performance levels, the strongest teams competed against each other in a separate competition, the Big6 European Football League (Big6). Since the teams that had dominated the EFL in previous years all took part in the first season of the Big6 in 2014, the Big6 is currently considered the most prestigious competition for European club teams.

Competition mode

Up to the 2017 season, the game was played in two groups, each with three teams. Each team competed once away in a simple round and enjoyed home rights once. The two group winners then competed against each other in the Eurobowl . In the 2018 season, only four teams will take part in the competition. The two finalists from last year each play once against two challengers. Each team competes once away and has one home right. Then the two teams with the most points will compete against each other in the final of the Eurobowl.
