EFAF Cup

The EFAF Cup was a European Cup competition in American football . It was organized by the European Federation of American Football (EFAF) as an additional European competition below the European Football League . From 2002 to 2013, the competition was held a total of twelve times. Record winners are the Graz Giants , who have won the title three times.

history

The EFAF Cup was held for the first time in 2002. The field of participants consisted of six teams from national associations, whose national champions competed in the European Football League (EFL). Austria played a special role, its national champions from 2001, the Vienna Vikings , taking part in both the EFL and the EFAF Cup. In the following year, two national champions, the Avedøre Monarchs from Denmark and the Zurich Renegades from Switzerland, took part in the EFAF Cup, whose national associations were not represented in the EFL.

As of the 2009 season, no Austrian teams took part in the EFAF Cup for scheduling reasons, as a structural change in the Austrian Football League resulted in more games for the teams in question. In 2014 the EFAF Cup was replaced by the European Football League , whose role as the highest international competition in European American football was taken over by the Big6 European Football League .

Game mode

In the group stage, three teams in different groups played out the respective group winners and runners-up. Each team played once against each team in the group. Depending on the number of groups, semi-finals or quarter-finals took place after the group stage.

By March 31 of the corresponding year, the participating clubs had to submit a list (roster) of a maximum of 60 players to the EFAF who could be used in the tournament. Late registrations were not possible.

For each game day, the teams registered a roster with up to 45 eligible players. Of these, a maximum of three players were allowed to be so-called "Americans" who could play at the same time. According to the EFAF, “Americans” are players with US , Canadian , Mexican or Japanese citizenship.
