The Marburg Mercenaries are an American football club (AFV) from Marburg in Hesse , which plays in the southern group of the German Football League (GFL).

history

The AFV Mercenaries was founded in 1991 and since then has played its way from the Association League Hessen (5th division) to the 2nd Bundesliga South within a few years . In 2002 the Mercenaries (in German: Söldner ) achieved promotion to the German Football League (GFL) South by winning against the Munich Cowboys in relegation . The year before, the mercenaries missed promotion in relegation.

After a year of training with just one win from twelve games the descent of which was the 2003 season in the relegation avoided.

In the 2004 season the team played their way forward: They won the South German championship title and defeated last year's champions Hamburg Blue Devils in the quarter-finals of the German Bowl Championship . In the semi-finals, the team failed at the eventual champions Berlin Adler .

In the 2005 season , the Mercenaries competed for the first time on the European stage in the EFAF Cup and won it with a 49:14 victory in Paris against the hosting Elancourt Templiers . They also defended their title as South German champions. Again, the team beat the reigning champions in the quarterfinals and failed in the semifinals, this time to the Hamburg Blue Devils .

In 2006 the Mercenaries could not defend their title in the EFAF Cup. Although they won both group games, they failed in the quarterfinals at the Graz Giants with 28:31. However, the title of South German champion could be defended in the 2006 season and after beating the Hamburg Blue Devils, the Mercenaries reached the German Bowl for the first time in their club's history . This was lost in Braunschweig against the Braunschweig Lions .

By reaching the final of the German Bowl and the renunciation of the Braunschweig Lions champions , the Mercenaries had the right to participate in the European Football League for the first time in the 2007 season . There they met in Division 3 on the Flash de La Courneuve from France and the Spanish representative Barcelona Pioners . In the Eurobowl on July 1, 2007 in Vienna against Dodge Vikings Vienna , however, they were clearly beaten at 19:70. In the 2007 GFL season , the Marburger reached second place in the south, prevailed at home against the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes with 21:16 in the quarter-finals, but were eliminated in the semifinals with the Braunschweig Lions 21:26. At the press conference after the game, Coach Arbon announced that he would no longer be available as head coach from November.

In the 2008 season , the Mercenaries won the southern group. The quarter-finals against Dresden could be won with 32:21, in the semifinals the Braunschweig Lions again prevailed (21:49).

In the 2009 season , the Mercenaries reached 2nd place in the southern group. The quarter-finals in Marburg against Dresden could be won 64:63. In the semifinals in Berlin they lost to the Berlin Adler (36:21). After the team was able to play for the southern German championship in the 2013 season , the mercenaries also made it into the playoffs in the 2014 season . The series of eleven consecutive playoffs ended on September 21, 2014 with a defeat at the Dresden Monarchs (22:42), as the team could not build on their successes in the recent past.
