The Georg-Gaßmann-Stadion is a football stadium with a category B athletics facility in the Ockershausen city center of the Hessian university town of Marburg . It has a capacity of around 15,000 spectators, making it one of the largest sports facilities in Central Hesse .
Stadion
The Georg Gaßmann Stadium was completed in 1967 and named after the former Mayor of Marburg, Georg Gaßmann . In addition to the grass sports field, the stadium has a complete athletics facility with a plastic track and jumping facility. In 2001, the old plastic benches in the main grandstand, which seats around 2,000 spectators, were replaced by seat shells from the Fritz Walter Stadium in Kaiserslautern . By June 2007 the stadium was renovated and the completely covered grandstand was partially rebuilt. Since then, there have been box seats above the seats. In addition, rooms were created for the sports department of the city of Marburg.
Side squares and sports halls
In addition to the large stadium, the sports grounds consist of other sports facilities. Among other things, there are two artificial turf football pitches as well as a new artificial turf field for hockey and two beach volleyball courts in the sports park area , also known as the large sports field . In addition, the stadium of VfB Marburg and the artificial turf pitch of Sportfreunde Blau-Gelb Marburg border the site. In addition, the Georg-Gaßmann-Halle and the commercial school hall are two sports halls in the immediate vicinity.
use
The Georg Gaßmann Stadium is used by the American football team of the Marburg Mercenaries . Football games outside of the younger youth area rarely take place in the stadium. Exceptions in the past few years were VfB Marburg's test matches against higher-class teams such as Eintracht Frankfurt or 1. FC Kaiserslautern, as well as the final in the women's Hessen Cup in 2009 and 2010. In addition, the stadium and the surrounding facilities are available for school sports.
In August 2009, the Thorpe Cup was the first major athletics competition to take place in the stadium. Several thousand spectators saw the international competition of decathletes and heptathletes from Germany and the United States . Due to the large number of spectators, the competition also took place in 2010 and 2012 in the Georg Gaßmann Stadium.
The final of the Hessen Cup 2011 took place on May 10th between SV Wehen Wiesbaden and KSV Hessen Kassel in the Georg-Gaßmann-Stadion.
