Georg Gassmann

Georg Gaßmann (born May 28, 1910 in Marburg ; † August 5, 1987 ibid) was a German politician , Mayor of Marburg from 1951 to 1970 and a member of the Hessian State Parliament ( SPD ).

education and profession

After graduating from high school, Georg Gaßmann studied law in Berlin and Marburg from 1929 to 1932 . In 1933 he was briefly imprisoned for political reasons and excluded from his doctorate. From 1934 he worked as a commercial clerk and did his military service from 1939 to 1945 . He was then a prisoner of war until 1946.

politics

Georg Gaßmann was elected mayor in 1946 and lord mayor of Marburg in 1951. He held this office until 1971.

Georg Gaßmann had the city motorway built right through Marburg, dividing the city into two parts. Gaßmann also became known for his plan to tear down the traditional upper town with the old half-timbered houses and replace it with a car-friendly inner city. But this plan was not carried out. Instead, Gaßmann's successor, Drechsler, had the upper town redeveloped and turned into a showpiece in Marburg.

From December 1, 1950 to November 30, 1970 he was also a member of the Hessian state parliament.

In 1954 he was a member of the second and in 1964 the fourth federal assembly .

Honors

Georg Gaßmann was an honorary citizen of the city from 1971, holder of the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal of the State of Hesse and the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Georg Gaßmann Stadium in the south of Marburg , which can hold around 12,000 spectators, was named after Gaßmann .
