Thomas Spies (born June 27, 1962 in Marburg ) is a Hessian politician ( SPD ) and Lord Mayor of Marburg.

Thomas Spies was born on June 27, 1962 in Marburg as the son of the teacher Pauli Spies and the painter and sculptor Joachim Spies . After graduating from the Martin Luther School and doing military service with the medical service (1981-1983), Spies studied human medicine in Marburg from 1983 to 1990 . From 1991 to 1993 he was an intern in Marburg. This was followed by medical and scientific activities (tumor research) at the Clinic of the Philipps University in Marburg , from 1991 to 1992 neuropathology, from 1992 to 1993 internal medicine, from 1993 to 1998 research assistant / doctor in surgery, since 1999 freelance medical work. In 1997 he received his doctorate with the topic “A study of the psychological effects of vaginal delivery versus Caesarean section on the postpartum relationship”.

Spies has been a member of the SPD since 1980 and has been deputy sub-district chairman there since 1998. From 2001 he was chairman of the local association Marburg-Süd for several years. Since 2001 he has been chairman of the working group Social Democrats in Health Care Hessen-Nord, from 2006 to 2015 he was deputy national chairman. He has been federal chairman since 2015.

From 1997 to 2001 he was a city councilor in Marburg and since 2001 a district councilor for Marburg-Biedenkopf.

In the Hessian state parliament he had been a simple member of parliament since September 28, 1999, where he was chairman of the committee for science and art and a member of the committee for social affairs and integration. Spies was a member of the Study Commission on Demographic Change in the 16th electoral term.

From April 5, 2008 until he took office as Mayor of Marburg, he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Hessian state parliament . He resigned his state parliament mandate when he took office.

Spie's main focus is health policy . Here in 2003, together with Andrea Ypsilanti, he developed the Hessian model of citizens 'insurance , on the basis of which the SPD concept of “Solidarity Citizens' Insurance” was decided. Other focal points of his political work are science policy and the consequences of demographic change . He is currently head of a think tank of the Hessen SPD on the subject of digitization and society.

When the incumbent Mayor of Marburg Egon Vaupel announced his retirement from office on December 1, 2015, Spies ran for his successor against Dirk Bamberger (CDU). Spies received the most votes, but not the absolute majority required. In the runoff election on June 28, 2015, Spies received 60% of the vote and was thus elected to office.

Spies was also chairman of the Working Group of Social Democrats in Healthcare from 2015 to 2017 .
