history

The school was founded on October 8, 1838 as a two-class secondary school. The only small school initially resided in town houses at Am Grün 3 and Nikolaistraße 4. In 1899, what was now the upper secondary school for boys was given its own building on Biegen (today Savignystraße 2), which still serves as the main building today. In 1933 the school was renamed "Adolf Hitler School". After the war, the school was rebuilt with Fritz Dickmann as director. In 1957 the school was named "Martin Luther School" after other names, some with local references, had been discarded. The MLS has been a boys' school since its inception, and co-education was introduced in 1969 .

Originally founded as a secondary school, the Martin Luther School is now a grammar school with a focus on science and music after several changes in its school form from Realprogymnasium , Oberrealschule to Realgymnasium .

In the 1960s, a scientific wing was added, in 1979 a two-story building was added for the lower school and the latter was increased to three floors in 2000. In 2010 an additional building was completed which offers special music rooms and a new cafeteria.

In the last few years the school celebrated two anniversaries - in 1999 the main building was 100 years old and in 2013 the 175th anniversary was celebrated with a festival week.

MLS has been part of the national MINT-ec excellence school network since 2003.

In 2016, with the renovation of the Erwin-Piscator-Haus, four new classrooms were added between the Erwin-Piscator-Haus and the existing cafeteria.

"Lighthouse School"

The MLS is the “School Center for Natural Sciences and the Promotion of Talented Students” as part of the “Lighthouse Schools” project of the Hessian Ministry of Culture . As part of this project, four schools in Hessen were designated as lighthouse schools with different focuses. The MLS focuses on the natural sciences. In addition to her, the Musterschule Frankfurt am Main (focus on music), the Lichtenbergschule Darmstadt (languages) and the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule Kassel (mathematics) received awards. The basis for the project is the government program 2003–2008. Participation in the project opens up additional educational opportunities for the MLS. This includes promoting particularly talented students in the field of mathematics, maintaining and expanding activities in the natural sciences and working with the Philipps University of Marburg . This is mainly made possible by the fact that the MLS is entitled to around 51 additional teaching hours. The school has to reapply every three years. Faculty 3 of MLS, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, developed a program for the project. It consists of the following points:

  1. Students experiment
  2. Promotion of all students
  3. Developing schools and teaching

The school projects that the MLS has already implemented as a lighthouse school include the NaWi days with an excursion in grade six, a math rally in grade 5, the chemistry group in the fifth and sixth grades, mathematics Crash courses in grades 9 to 11 and math competition training. In addition, the MLS offers the opportunity to take three natural science subjects in upper secondary school, support for highly gifted students with a seal of approval and participate in various development and research projects.
