The Hessenpokal is the football association cup of the Hessian Football Association (HFV) . It is organized annually for Hessian football clubs in the 3rd league and amateur teams in the divisions below. The winner of the Hessen Cup qualifies for the first main round in the DFB Cup .

The official name is currently "Bitburger Hessenpokal", as the cup has been sponsored by the Bitburger brewery since the 2019/20 season . Before that, there had been a sponsorship partnership with the Krombacher brewery since the 2010/11 season .

Until the 2012/13 season

At the beginning of the season, the regional cup competitions took place in the Hessian soccer regions , for which the district cup winners of the previous season were qualified. The regions Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Kassel, Wiesbaden, Fulda and Gießen / Marburg determined the participants via the regional cups. Hessian third division teams were also automatically qualified for the Hessen Cup.

From the 2013/14 season

The regional cup competitions have been discontinued since 2013/14 and the cup competition is held during a league season. According to the rules of the HFV, lower-class clubs have home rights, which can, however, be exchanged.

The 32 Hessian district cup winners of the previous season qualify for the first round of the Hessen Cup. They are divided into eight pots from a regional point of view and compete against each other in the knockout system . The 16 winners of the 1st round qualify for the 2nd round of the Hessen Cup. The eight winners of the 2nd round qualify for the 3rd round (= round of 16).

In the last sixteen of the Hessen Cup, the third and regional league teams, the two leaders of the Hessen League of the previous season and the two winners of the fair play rating of the association play classes join in (to get 8 teams, playoffs are sometimes necessary). Together with the eight winners of the 2nd round, eight pairings are formed. The games in the quarter-finals and semi-finals are then drawn before the final is played in regularly changing stadiums.
