history

The Verein für Leibesübungen (VfL) Marburg was founded as a gymnastics club on July 28, 1860, making it the oldest and most traditional club in the university town of Marburg. After the club had already grown by a few departments, it was forcibly merged with the football club VfB Marburg in 1937. The resulting football division played after the Second World War until 1965 and again for two seasons in the 1980s in the highest Hessian league and reached the Hesse championship in 1959. In 1992, the football department separated from the entire club and was re-established as VfB Marburg. The former basketball department of the club split off as BC Marburg into an independent club whose first women's team currently plays in the first division and was German champions and cup winners in 2003.
