The SG Westend is a sports club in the Frankfurt district of Gallus , whose football department was represented for seven years between 1964/65 and 1970/71 in the Hessen League , which was still third class at the time .

history

The club was founded in 1896 as a gymnastics club under the name Freie Turnerschaft Frankfurt am Main, Department 2 Westend . Soon athletics and fistball were also practiced.

Football was added in 1921 with the transfer of the Hermania football club . Their greatest success was the final participation against SC Adler Pankow in the championship organized by the Workers' Sports Association in 1928.

In 1933 the club - like all workers' sports clubs in Germany - was dissolved and all its assets (inventory and space) were confiscated.

A re-establishment took place in August 1945. The football department became the sporting figurehead of the club.

At the end of the 1963/64 season, they were promoted to the Hessenliga , the highest amateur league at the time, in which they immediately became runner-up behind SC Opel Rüsselsheim in 1964/65 , which entitled them to participate in the games for the German Amateur Championship .

By winning the Hessen Cup twice in 1968 and 1970, the team crowned the most successful phase in the history of the SG Westend club.

But from now on it went downhill. After seven years of membership in the Hessen League, the team was relegated to the group league in the 1970/71 season and relegated to the district class three years later.

Although 1976/77 succeeded again the championship of the district class Frankfurt West and the associated promotion to the group league. But due to significant financial problems, the team was passed through in the three seasons from 1979/80 to 1981/82 from the group league to the B-Class Frankfurt-West. The absolute low point was reached in 1988 when the footballers relegated to the C-Class.

Although the return to the district league succeeded again for the 2003/04 season. But after the first half of the season, which was completed with a considerable place in the secured midfield, the club ran out of money and the acquired players left the club. Even worse than the inevitable relegation of the decimated team to the district league was the fact that at the beginning of the 2004/05 season there was no coach or team at all, and the football department was practically on the verge of collapse. Out of this need they quickly built a team of former reserve players, Soma players and a few new signings, which kept the game going with difficulty, but could not prevent the club's further relegation.

In the 2012/13 season, the SG Westend played in the group league Frankfurt West, in the season 2018/19 in the district Oberliga Frankfurt.
