Ross Hickey

Ross Hickey (* 1987 in Grangecon , County Wicklow ) is an Irish boxer . He won a bronze medal in the lightweight at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool .

Career

Ross Hickey started boxing when he was a teenager at the boxing club Grangecon BC . He celebrated his first success in 2003 when he became Junior Champion of all Ireland in flyweight. In the following years he could not win any medals at Irish junior championships. It was not until 2006 that he began to achieve success again, already starting as a senior. He was Irish runner-up that year, losing in the final fight of the Irish featherweight championship against Eric Donovan on points (6:20). In the same year he took second place in featherweight at the British 4 Nations Cup in Dublin . He lost the final fight against Stephen Smith from England on points (10:31).

In 2007, Ross Hickey finished 3rd in the Featherweight Championship at the Irish Championship because he lost on points in the semifinals against David Oliver Joyce . In 2007 he was also used in two international matches of the Irish national relay and won it in Dublin over Iwan Elisarow from Russia , while he lost on points in Rzeszów against Poland's Krzystof Szot .

In January 2008, Ross Hickey was then Irish champion for the first time. Moved up to the lightweight he beat Anthony Cacace on points in the final battle. He was then used at the 1st European qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Pescara . He could not qualify for Beijing there because he lost to Miklós Varga from Hungary (22:39) after winning points over Krzystof Szot (27:19) in the quarter-finals . Only two boxers in each weight class could qualify for Beijing at this tournament.

In March 2008, the Irish Boxing Federation held another elimination tournament for the second European qualifying tournament in Athens . In Dublin Ross Hickey won this tournament, where he again defeated Anthony Cacace on points in the final battle (10: 3). In Athens Ross Hickey retired after a point defeat against Romal Amanow from Azerbaijan after the first round and could not qualify for Beijing 2008.

In October 2008 Ross Hickey won another elimination tournament of the Irish Boxing Federation in Dublin, where they were determined starters at the European Championships in Liverpool in 2008 . He won there in the lightweight with a final victory over Eric Donovan (23: 5).
